The air box on a fuel injection module has a rubber pipe coming out the back that I don’t know where it goes. Noticed when trying to tidy up the engine.

Look inside the RR fender inboard of the tail light for a canister, the plumbing and function are explained here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?searc..._chars=200

Kudos for keeping your original FI system. The system is superior to carburetion in terms of power and drivability when functioning properly, and is actually very reliable despite its age. The only issue may be parts availability, but almost everything is available used or new. Look out for common problems like cracked/hardened vacuum/emission hoses.

Is it the line from canister maybe?

See these three - you see the two lines going into right rear fender well.
