Do any of you guys know if I can paint on top of the current paint that is on my car or do I have to sand it to the metal. It seems to be taking forever. Maybe there is a quicker way, I am just using a plastic/rubbery thing that hooks onto an electric drill. I would appreciate any advice. |

if the paint isn't cracking or laquer checking or peeling then yes you canpaint over it but if the paint isn't a good base then when you paint over it then it can make things worse
striping a vehicle to bare metal is tha best though because you know what you have and the primers today are far superior to the old stuff
how are you striping it
where are you at |

you can paint on top of old paint. just as long as there's no rust under that. also good prepping is a must so the new paint sticks. |

I am in utah and am using some plastic wheel that I bought at wal-mart
it attaches to my electric drill. This method is very time consuming. What are some other ways of stripping the paint?[/quote] |

You can chemically strip the paint, a DA sander. Hand grinder with a sanding wheel. _________________ 1967 VW type 1 (sold)

The best tool I've found for stripping paint (other than a sandblaster) is a 3M 36 grit Surface Conditioning disc on a 4" angle grinder. Let the machine do the work and it will strip paint and filler with minimal effect on the underlying metal. |

I agree....letting your machine do the work is the best way. Stay away from chemicals if you are new to them or if you have kids. |
