Calling all the experts! I am completely stumped.
Brief recap of past two weeks' posts: Car wouldn't stay running. Started w/jump then died. Changed voltage regulator. Charged battery. Changed generator brushes. Tonight put in a new generator.
STILL, the car starts with a jump, then dies. G light is STILL on.
Generator is lined up properly. All wires are connected properly. Yes, Tram, I finally checked those VR ground screws and they're good and tight. Polarity was set on both generator and VR.
With a jump, it starts immediately. No hesitation whatsoever.
What now????? |

"New Defective" regulator, most likely. You don't polarise the regulator, ONLY the generator!
I was afraid this was going to happen. I wanted to shout "YOU DON'T NEED A GENERATOR" but I didn't want to seem like an asshole.
The "clue" was that the light started staying on AFTER you replaced the regulator.
I guess I didn't catch that you had "polarised" the regulator. My bad!
It's GOT to be the regulator or a wire. If I were closer, I'd pop over and straighten it out, but I'm all the way in Oreygunn. |

Wait a minute -- the instructions that came with the regulator said that I had to polarize it. It even showed me a little dot that the wire wasn't supposed to be bigger than.
WTF?
And don't worry about being an asshole. I have my moments too. |

Polarising a voltage regulator is news to me... and I've been in this racket over thirty years. Either I'm just learning something new... very possible... or.... but I don't think so!!!!
Where the hell did you get that regulator!!!??? Are you POSITIVE (no pun intended) that they're not telling you to polarise the GENERATOR???!!!
Not dissin' yer word. I'm just flabbergasted! |

Let me see if I can find the directions. Nope can't locate them right now.
Maybe it said "set the polarity." Anyway, I swear I only did what was written. You know me -- I don't know sh*t from shinola. I wouldn't know to do anything unless it were told to me specifically.
Now I'm gonna go crazy until I find that stupid piece of paper. |

Karen, relax! I'd be willing to bet that if you replace the regulator, again- WITHOUT polarising it, it'll work.
I've got a good used one. If you want it, EM me and I'll send it over to you. |
