hello everyone,

i have a '72 super and it smells of petrol on the inside. this is worsened if the fuel tank is full or if i rev the car quite high. i know VW's smell normally but this is lots worse than usual. Do you think i have a fuel leak somewhere? if so how easy is it replace the fuel line and how much would that cost?

cheers, ALEX

They usually rust out along the seam on the back side of the tank.

You should see if it's repairable since the aftermarket tanks are crap.

Hiya Alex,

Yes, you'll want to check that back seam on the tank.

However, there are some easy fixes on gas tank leaks. I always take a look at easy-to-fix areas first.

1. Take a good look at the gas tank sending unit and its seal. This is often a source of leaks when the tank is full.

2. Check out the filler hose and its connections.

3. Take a hard look at the gas cap and its seal.

4. You'll notice a bunch of small hosing (if your car is in its original configuration) in the area of the filler hose. This hose is there to route loose hydrocarbons away from the tank. Check all of these for continuity and connections.

5. You should have an expansion tank to collect and route those loose hydrocarbons. Those little hoses will lead you to it. It should be in good shape.

Those would be easy checks to do while under the hood to look at that rear seam.

Is the smell in the front or back of the car?
If it does it when you rev up then check the condition of the hose from pump to carb. if it's comming fron the front then check the canister behinde the pas. rear fender. if the hose is connected to the fan shroud then it could be blowing fumes up into the trunk if the hoses and expantion chamber is gone or damaged.
