Glenn, how often do you change? Are you satisfied with the results?
Currently I have a pump/filter setup which allegedly is a 100% flow. However it rests close to my stock exhaust and although my car does not appear to be running hot I wonder how much heat is being transfered to my oil due to the proximity.
Also how expensive is it? Would you wait until a rebuild to add said system or would you pull the engine to do it now?
Thanks. |

The filter is rates at 8 microns and has an extended service interval of 20,000 miles.
Since I only drive 3000-4000 per year I change the filter every 3 years. At each oil change I open the filter and drain the oil. That allows me to inspect for debris and the condition of the filter. I can see that there's nothing in the oil.
Last August I had a valve spring break and I continuted to drive for about 1 mile to get off the interstate. After towing the car home I pulled the valve cover and found the pushrod chewed up the Pauter aluminum rocker a but. There was aluminum everywhere. I dumped the oil and found some aluminum in the oil. I dumped the filter and found aluminum on the input side, but the output side was clean... no aluminum.
Afer replacing all 8 valve springs, retainers, keepers and push rods, I flushed the engine with 6 quarts of kerosene. I then filled the engine with fresh oil and a new filter and ran it for 5 minutes until it was hot. I then dumped the oil and inspected the filter. The filter caught some more aluminum and again the output side was clear.
I then added fresh oil and a new filter and drive the car 400 miles. Last weekend i pulled the filter and inspeced it. Both sides were clean and no more aluminum. I reinstalled the filter and will return to the normal schedule.
The filter is about $90 and the cartridges are about $12. Not cheap, but it saved my engine. _________________ Glenn

Thanks for the detail. In december when I replace my exhaust it would be a good time to do this as well. Thanks again. |
