Hi--

Anyone had any luck finding a gas strut alternative to the front hood springs on the 74 Super? I had my springs fixed for a while, but one of the springs has bent again, and it is throwing the whole front hood out of whack. I know I could search the classifieds, but I am exploring other alternatives. Any other ideas are also welcome.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Mine did the same thing. Both of the springs were bent. All I could do was remove them and straighten them. Except that it works well for a while. One has already began to bend again.

all of the sources which i've found for gas hood-struts only list supers to '72, which u probably already know if you've looked into this for any amount of time.

i'm not sure how the mounts and related dimensions differ between the early and later years, so i dont' know exactly how you would go about adapting them to ur '74. but it reasons that with a little creativity and some fabrication it could be done.

for wut it's worth, hot vw's always has quite a few ads which offer the struts for $15 or so... it's worth checking out. or, i could be mistaken, but i think i got mine from mooreparts.com, they were pretty cheap. good luck

The only problem is the offset in the hood to the body mount. The hood mounts are narrower than the body. Not a problem if you could fab up a peice to allign the two.
