|
|
I'm thinkiing about getting this 1966 beetle: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=118048 and converting it into a Baja. Any known issues with converting a 66 to a baja? Is this car to nice to tear apart? This will be my first baja build. Thanks for the help. |

Honestly...yeah thats too nice a body, and year, to Baja. You would prefer a newer model anyway, with the IRS rearend. So shoot for 68 and up. _________________ 69 VW Baja under construction.

if you want to build a baja, start with a clapped out car, not a good car, and as was suggested, a later model. _________________ OG JHC

look for a beetle that has already been cut up. some purists on the samba might pass out if you cut up that car. my baja was in a chevy junkyard, picked it up for $150. found another for $400 and put the two together. roll cage from one, tilt front end from the other, etc..... _________________ blank |

Well crap, that's kind of what I was thinking. I'm having a lot of trouble finding a car with a running engine. Bajaherbie, can you recomend any place around OK to find beat up beetles? Any good junkyards you know of? I'll put a WTB ad on the samba. |

It looks like a good price, but on 66'-68' cars you'd be dealing with swingaxle rear and ball joint front end. at least with later, and dare I say, earlier cars you only have to deal with on or ther other (if your in the US). _________________ Markus |

Check your local yards atleast for a body, (with title), or auto traders, the classifieds, then hunt around for good running motor, maybe from a VW shop close by you. I have done it many of times, bought a motor from a local shop for around $200, and had no probs with em, actually got one with a nice cam in it, and it was a fun motor! _________________ 69 VW Baja under construction.

Not a whole lot of VW shops here in SW Oklahoma but I will start searching the junk yards with new vigilance and have been keeping an eye on the classifieds. The only stuff I've been to find so far has added up to $800 for a piecemeal car so I though ~$700 for the whole car was a pretty good deal. Don't want any restoration dudes to faint though; don't need that on my conscience . Thanks for the advice this is a great forum. |
