Has anyone used this product? It's in Samba classifieds and this month's Hot VWs Magazine. Worthwhile?

Yes they work well for letting you know when oil temp is getting hotter then you want.
You can connect it to your oil pressure light or to a seperate light.
Light will flicker when getting about 225F and when it gets hotter light stays on.
I used the ones Berg sells (same as other ones being sold) and it works if you not planning on using a oil temp gauge.

I have one along with a temp gauge. I like having a light in case i'm not watching the gauge.

It's never gone off.

Just put one in last week. On the Berg website it appeared they stopped selling in August due to supply of parts from a vendor; found one similar @ www.savemybug.com ........... (no relation/interest to seller).

I did find it a little harder to read the oil level against the brass background so I carefully scribed upper and lower marks to match my current dipstick/oil level. Made it a little bit easier. Kind of neat to watch that spring wind up as it gets hot! And it does set the light off when it makes contact.

I did not realize that Berg had stop selling them.
Like you point out Save My Bug who advertises here on the Samba is selling them now.
On their webpage it says it fits Bugs Type III Squarebacks, Fastbacks, and Buses that use a type I engine.
No were could I find on their site how it would work in a type III.

I'll post some pics when I get home tonight. Of the old and new dipsticks side by side as well as the new dipstick in the engine.

IIRC they were the same length, it was basically pull the old one out, put the new one in, route the wire behind the generator stand, make the new connection at the oil pressure sender, done. It is slightly more difficult to remove, mostly due to the wire being attached, but certainly nothing to worry about.
