"The Odessa File" (1974) takes place in late 1963. At the very beginning of the movie, Jon Voight is a magazine reporter in Hamburg, Germany driving a Mercedes 220S or so convertible. He pulls over to the curb to hear a news update about the JFK shooting; there is a yellow S'back on the other side of the street. It has the later large bumpers and all-silver wheels indicating a '70 or later. Then Voight continues his drive and stops at a police scene. There's a plain-jane white early S'back with no hood trim and cone front blinkers parked at the scene, in which the police detective soon drives off. At least that one was period-correct. |

Here are the two Squarebacks from "The Odessa File". The early one is seen later in the movie driving in the Elbe River tunnel beneath Hamburg, with a clear shot of the rear. I did not have my camera ready for that.

My favorite line is the one peralta drops after "one of the perks of having a job" |

Early '70's British TV show "Van der Valk" takes place in Amsterdam, Holland. Many Type 3s are part of the traffic, being a very popular car in that era.
In the first 2 minutes of Season 2, Episode 6 a moped rider drives past an early SB parked at the curb, then this one a few seconds later-
Here's the episode-

I remember a Notch in another episode which was blown up... |

From Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" in 1976.

"The taking of Pelham One Two Three" @ 1974. New York City police car "chase" scene to delivery the money to the perps. Car behind the Fastback is an Audi 100LS 2-door , then a Ferrari 330 . Typical Type 3 bent-down front bumper from light parking tap, inevitable in hard city life.

For some reason I was moved to listen to "Going Up The Country" by Canned Heat as performed at Woodstock. I have no idea why as I don't particularly like the song and even couldn't find for a second because I mis-remembered it as being by Country Joe and the Fish. Either way, I eventually found a video on You Tube and found this nice black Squareback at 1:09. I like that the "roof rack" is some weird bundle affixed to the roof by a bit of fabric that seems to be pinched in place by the pop-out windows. But what year I can't tell as I can't make out the shape of the turn signals.

Law & Order Criminal Intent "In the Dark" (2004)- Detectives Goren and Eames are leaving the small garage where mechanic Butch is working on a '69 Fastback. Other shots and watching the episode carefully do not show the finger indent for the fuel door. Frosty hubcaps are to prevent glare/reflections from the studio lights. Car was not driven; only shown parked in the shop.

Cool!
I just had to post this. I know this is a type 3 list....but There are so few 411 and 412's in movies...that we dont have a 411/412 movie list.....and this is a "squareback" of sorts...and it is aircooled and a VW....so I thought I would throw it in here....
From the 2013 movie Rush. Thats Chris Hemsworth walking in front of what looks like a very nice late 1972 or mid 1973 VW 412 with Porsche 2.0 alloy wheels.....
If it is too out of place I will understand and delete it!
