First off, if my English sounds weird please take note that I speak french so I'm doing my best.
I just bought a 68 notchback, this is my first air cooled vw. I'm 26 and had several mk1 jetta,mk2 jetta & scirocco, and still have a very clean 84 jetta coupe. I have been reading the type 3 forum and type3 classifieds since 4 years ago but never thought I would have enough money to buy one. I even started a budget with my wife and we calculated that in 2017 I would be able to buy a descent one...but this one was so close to me (9h away off my home, and it was in Canada) and in good shape I could not resist, so I took the little we had saved and empty-ed my bank account. I just hope nothing break on my house because I'll be screwed.
The car start and drive great but the brake are not working at all, so the first thing I need to do is fix that and the passenger pop out window (the place where the latch is screwed is rusted/rotted. I also need to make the horn work. Then I will try to past the safety so I can actually drive it.
This is the rust where the latch goes on the helper side. Do they usually rust from there? I tough cutting the rust, then por15 it, then take a plate off metal and some screwed and screw it on the car so I could reinstall the window. And in the future I'll weld the metal plate. Is this a god idea?
I'm the 4th owner and the notch was well taken care off, A lady bought it in 68 and had it untill 2003 then she sold it to her nephew, and he sold it the a local guy in 2009 (I think). The notch always stayed in the same city in Ontario. The odometer show 25000 miles and the p.o. told me it was the real mileage. The thing I dont get is that why does a car sold in Canada have a mph speedo?
Picture from the add on Kijiji:
Original bill off sale
Now some quick picture in my garage, I let one off my friend to store/work on is rabbit in my garage, but sadly there is no more room for him, I let him stay until he finds a another place so until then its really tight in there...yes there is a black rabbit buried in the back...
The paint seems to be original except on the 2 front fender where some bondo was done. And the car is full off small holes in the paint, I never saw that before, it's like a stone chip but every where on the flat surface off the car.
I know that the p.o. had some parts off the exhaust changed, and there is missing something on the driver side, I think it might be a pipe for hot air that goes in the carb:
I really know nothing about air cooled mechanic, and not alot on type 3 so if you have some input for me feel free to help. As soon as I free some money I'll buy a bentley because I have a lot to learn. I read somewhere here that in 68 they had f.i. engine with a 1600cc. is it possible that mine is 1500cc with a carb and still be original?

Can't help you much with the main stuff, but I can answer the speedometer question. Until the late 70's, the speed limits in Canada were in miles per hour. |

Oh yeah that 68 is original. Its a Standard or a model or two up from a standard. Not sure how they did the options for Canada. I do know that for your market FI was an option, so a single port 1500cc single carb motor is perfectly ok there. You dont have a clock eithor, no side pad back trunk, plain black front liner but an Eberspacher!, non wrap around reflectors and painted wing windows-all standard-plain jane VW stuff, nothing fancy.
Sweet find. You do not see them that compleet anymore! _________________

Fix this ASAP. The muffler is missing the clamp to the heat exchanger. You can see the black soot that has been shot out aimed to the front. This blows CO right into your heater!
The problem is you will have to remove the muffler to get the asbestos and metal rings on the heat exchanger outlet.
I also see the outlet of a heat riser on the intake manifold in this picture. Either the single carb was not original, or the wrong muffler/rear heat exchanger is on it.
From the looks of the left front heat exchanger (at least the front half!) it's new, no rust and a label still on it. Do you know the story here?
Nice car, all things considered. Clean but some rust issues. Should be fun! |

That's a nice clean (by NE Canadian standards) 68 standard Notch. Looks like OE paint on it, and it came with a gas heater. I pointed out to Sue, that there's no cut out for an ECU, so it was originally a carbed car (like it is).
Phil, I think the muffler got changed, as that's where the tube for the heat riser would attach. I know, as I've got to remove mine from my new muffler for my T-34 (the muffler was originally designed for a single carb), which is a 1500, with welded on pre-heaters. Where would you find a "late" muffler for a single carb t-3 engine? My first guess is Europe, as they got that combo until the end of production. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Couldn't you leave the muffler in place and just remove the heat exchanger? It looks like you could just slide it forward... |

I think his car is the rare A model. Got to see one up close many years ago. Strange to see a later model with a single carb and the black cardboard in the front trunk. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

You could, but I'm betting the right side is the same, so the effort is the same regardless. |

Thank you for the history lesson I didn't knew that, now I feel dumb:)

I plan to first make it drivable so I can pass safety to put plates on it :
-Fixing the brakes that don't work
-Fix the helper side rear pop out window that don't hold anymore because off the rust
-Fix the horn
I want to keep it stock except for the ride height and the front seat.
In the future (when I'll have money)I will change all the window seal, fix the rust on the front fender, put some carpet inside and I would love to have early seat with no headrest. I know 68 are supposed to have headrest but when I wanted a notch I wanted a early one, so the headrest has to go.

Thank you for the info I'll fix that before driving it. I know that the po had the rear muffler and the heat exchanger changed by a garage...they clearly put the wrong parts on it. I still don't know how I'm going to fix the exhaust part, do I buy the right heat exchanger (the one that tram pictuted) or... put ips west ceramic over the top exhaust with J-tubes, after all I have a gas heater so I think I could live without the exhaust heat.
I want to buy a bentley, do I need the early one (blue one) or the late one, I think I need the early one because that I have the 1500 with carb.
Thank you all for the good comments. |

I still don't know wich Bentley to buy, does the brown one for the late t3, 68 to 73 covers the 1500 engine or only the 1600, I just want to make sure I buy the right one.
Had little time for the car yesterday, I removed the brown cardboard on the rear parcel tray, it had moist in it, and was smelling bad. Found some rust underneath it...

Buy the blue Bentley first. You can cut down your highback seat frames and convert them to lowbacks. The headrest frame was just welded onto a lowback frame. Wire wheel all your interior metal and brush on Master Series. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Nice car, I love Notchbacks.
Your English is better than most here.
Might be smart to remove the fenders, to see if any rust is underneath them. _________________ 1968 Squareback

Thank you, I'll start with the blue one, and for the paint, I'll put por-15, I have some left over from my jetta.

Well you are good, that's in Maryland, at h20 international it's far from Québec, but it is worth the drive.

Thank you for the English compliment, but it does take lots off time to write, some times I write my sentences in google, just to make sure that it makes sense.
I'll take off the front fender, I'm sure there is some rust under there, like most car, rust start inside and then go out. But I wont take them off yet, I want to make the car drivable first. It will also give me some time to find some beading, I would like to find some green one but it looks impossible.
