I would guess this has been done before, but I haven't seen it. I used the ashtray behind the drivers seat to mount a 12V outlet from my aux bat. I plan to run one to the ashtray beside the sliding door also.
I had bought some of these:

just the recepticle. 1 1/8" holesaw...
It's a little tight in there...
Power for the Coleman Powerchill...

Great ideas. I've been thinking lately about running a 12v outlet under the dashboard, just above the glove box. That way I can run power to a GPS, cell phone, or whatever gadget comes along without having the wire in the loose fitting cig lighter. Then simply pull the GPS off the windshield and toss in the glove box. No need to unplug. Just thinking about it right now. _________________ '85 Westy |

How the heck did you get the ashtray chasis out? Not the inner tray, that's easy, but the ashtray itself. I tried gently raising the two tabs at the bottom, but it didn't budge. Wondering if it's also glued on? _________________ '95 Eurovan Camper (2.5L)

Mine was tough but it did pop out.
No glue on my 87 or 81.
Picture links broken?
No voila! For me

I got mine out no problem, but I can't get it back in. My van has a galvanized metal clip/spring behind the ashtray chassis which sits loose and fell down inside the interior panel. I fished it out but am having trouble with reinstallation. Any advice on how to keep the clip in place in order to replace the ashtray frame without removing the entire van interior? _________________ Early 1986 Wolfsburg Westy Weekender 2WD GL manual with KEP EJ22 |

For what it’s worth, I ran the 12v power supply cord from my GPS under the edge of the instrument cover and down behind the lower dash cover where it comes up to my aux power socket.
