Has anyone seen this before? Any thoughts on if it’s toast or how I could repair it? |

I'd say that might be close to a goner, if not a goner. I had some minor corrosion of a very similar style, just less advanced. I made surfacing tool to level it, and did what I could. In addition, instead of using m6 studs, I through-bolted from the inside of the case with a longer m6 bolt, just so the "case meat" was sandwiched between the bolt head and sump plate.
You can kinda see my "bolt-studs" in the lifter picture

got one worse then that ! caused by moisture, from oil not burning it off, forming acid, or just condensation and water getting in engine, water is heavier goes to bottom, why you should change oil every year even if it's not run, especially in damp climates. _________________ 73 Type 181

car had been sitting for several years before I got it, cylinders were froze so was/am in the process of rebuilding and found this. I'm thinking of making some metal split gaskets placing one inside with bolts through holding each half in place and one on the outside and filling void with JB weld. Am I nuts? |

Try it, let us know how it goes. Did you ask this on FB? If so, it seems like you just want one confirmation to do what you know you already want to do. It will probably seal. Go for it. _________________ "A petrol engine can start readily, run smoothly and give every appearance of being in good order, without necessarily being in good tune." - Colin Campbell, "The Sportscar Engine" |

Don't know why you have that impression bugguy, and why I would ask on FB is beyond me. But thanks for your informed response. |

Yes, see link above, it has been done several times before.
If you can afford the Belzona product, it would be better, but it’s about $200 for the same amount as a $6 JB Weld package |

There are a lot of specific VW groups on FB and someone asked that same question as soon as you posted this. It also looked the same as your pics. Just a coincidence... _________________ "A petrol engine can start readily, run smoothly and give every appearance of being in good order, without necessarily being in good tune." - Colin Campbell, "The Sportscar Engine" |
