This morning, on the way to work, I was cruising along at about 65 mph when all of a sudden my engine started to stutter. It felt like it would intermittently cut out for a couple of seconds, then start up again. So, I eased off the accelerator and that seemed to help but it still cut out on me, only not as frequently as if I was going faster. It did this all the way to work. What is going on with my car? Will I be able to/should I drive it home? I have been keeping up with oil changes and valve adjustments so I don't understand what could be wrong. Any help would be great. Thanks. Smile

P.S. Everything under the hood is all stock.

It sounds like you're not getting fuel. A common problem is that the old gas tanks get rust and crud in them, and then clog up the fuel filters. Try changing your fuel filter and see if that helps. If that does end up being the problem, you'll need to either clean and seal your tank, or get a new one. In the mean time, carry some extra fuel filters with you.

I just cleaned the gas tank last October. I can imagine the tank would get dirty again that quickly.

Sounds like fuel or ignition.

It's @ that time of year to make sure your heat risers are in check & icing isn't occuring -- (NOT A PROBLEM w/ Dual Carbs) -- check: http://www.vw-resource.com/heat_risers.html for a great article describing the scenario.

The engine was warm when I started having troubles. So icing wouldn't be an issue.

How long has it been since you replaced the points and condensor?

In the 6 months that I've owned the car, I haven't done a thing with the points or condensor. I've never messed with them because I really have no idea how to work on them. Everything that has to do with the distributor is a big puzzle to me. I guess it's time I learned.

Check the point gap. Adjust as required.

if that doesn't help

Replace the fuel filter. They're cheap.

and

If it's making a ticking sound, check the left front cylinder (#3) exhaust valve clearance.

Purchase Volume 1 from bugmevideo.com. Very easy to replace the points and condensor. And it's something you should learn to do anyways.

What he said plus invest in a dwell tach. They are cheap money and will save you tons of dough. Example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Actron-CP-7676-Digi...dZViewItem

Thanks everyone for your help! I cleaned out the fuel filter and cleaned the filter in the fuel pump, and now I'm trouble free. I will definately look into getting a tach/dwell meter and the Bugme video.
