PostPosted: Mon Feb 02, 2009 3:04 pm    Post subject: engagement of oil pump drive gear and cam Reply with quote

I'm putting together a 1776 and want to adjust the gear on the oil pump drive shaft so that the front of the shaft engages the slot in the cam face properly.

A Berg sheet says to adjust until the tang penetrates into the slot by 6mm.

My reading of the Bill Fisher book is to adjust until the "end play" between tang and the bottom of the slot is .020".

For my gear and cam, adjusting to .020 gives 8mm penetration.
Any tips on which is correct?

Most people don't really worry about it as long as tang on pump shaft does not bottom out in slot of cam shaft and keep pump cover from seating/sealing properly ...

I'd say as long as it is in the cam "at least" 6mm, then you're good. The measurement itself is not super critical.

I had a motor loose oil pressure once. Found the oil pump engaged the cam very shallow, and wore off. Pressed the shaft in the gear a bit further to fully engage, and was back in action.

The Berg oil pump instructions that have I have specify 0.235 to 0.275" engagement which is 5.969 mm minimum and 6.985 mm maximum engagement.
