While working on replacing my front carpet I unbolted the hand brake lever to get it out of the way, and I figured it could use a cleaning and re-lube. It's been kinda sketchy lately.
Found that one of the pins that hold the device together is missing the E-clip and that two of the pins are getting wallowed out where the E-clip goes.
https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/usa/vanagon/va/1990-78/7/711-70001/

Buslab is out of stock of these pins # N90209501 (#12 in diagram)
https://www.buslab.com/product-p/n90209501.htm
And the E-clip # N0124373 (#13 in diagram)
https://www.buslab.com/product-p/n0124375.htm

Have checked the other usual sources and came up empty. Any ideas for suitable replacements?

Also have a question about the silver cup shaped device at the end of the spring # 481-711-327 (#4 in diagram).
On mine it's kinda mushed, I have managed to bang it back into shape but there does not seem to be a definitive location for this thing. It's just sorta jammed at the end of the flare. Wondering why it got mangled.
(I'll post picture in a bit)

You could prolly get the pin machined for fairly cheap (not as cheap as the NLA part though). What's the E clip size? 8mm ballpark? Fit a 5/16" clip or have the groove machined to accept an imperial clip ( yuck).

Regarding items 12 and 13: would one of the clevis pins from this site work?

OK, I got lucky and found the missing E-clip. It had fallen off and dropped down into the plastic cup the brake rod/cable goes through.
Fortunately for me it was well wedged under the rod at the very bottom so didn't get sucked up while I was vacuuming all the old contact cement flakes.

Just fyi, Weedle does stock the E-clip, it's also used on the bay transmissions.

However the groove in the pin is so worn the clip will most likely pop off again so I still need to replace these.

Haven't been able to find a metric version so might have to use imperial and oversize the holes.
Stock pin is 15 mm long, 13mm diameter, 12mm groove, with 9mm between shoulder and groove. Groove is just over 1mm wide.
(edit per below; should say 8mm diameter, 7mm groove)

Wish I had a lathe, could easily turn one out of 7/16" (should be 5/16") stock. Neutral

A lathe would do a better job..but with those dimensions and a Dremel you can make one from an M14 or 9/16" bolt pretty quick.

You could put the bolt in a drill and spin it while using the cutting disc on a Dremel to make the ring groove. Then use the cutting disc to cut the bolt to the length you need.

While we're all spit-balling, is there a shoulder screw that can serve this purpose or provide a headstart on machining a suitable replacement?

Guilty as charged.

Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro).

Thanks for the ideas. I might just use a bolt and nylock nut until I can find (or make) the real thing. There's enough room under the cover to hide the (gasp) counterfeit fasteners for now.
The assembly is way more stable with all three pins holding it together, and a cleaning plus lube has smoothed the action.

Still not sure how that little cup at the end of the spring got chewed up.

13mm diameter is a rare thing with the Germans, it's usually 12 or 14 for shafts Rolling Eyes They really wanted to make it hard to drop in something else! Or maybe a gross 1/2" pin from the link Kevinm posted would match then just make the groove?

Not sure they are the right dimensions but those sure look a lot like the clutch and brake clevis pins.

looks like there's enough space on the nose of those to drill for a small cutter-pin. Along with a regular flat washer and call it a day

The diameter is 8mm, not 13 mm. One of mine is also worn, I'm ordering a shoulder screw from McMaster to try and I'll report back.

8mm ..... 5/16" ........ virtually identical.

5/16 inch = 7.9375 mm

HA! Good catch. Total embarrassing brain fart. Misread the metric scale on my calipers while scribbling down the measurements, d'oh! should have caught the fact that they're not a 1/2" in dia. Embarassed
Yep, 8mm diameter with 7mm groove.

I was having to convert manually so I was extra paranoid. Mine has the same worn groove yours probably does so your three was timely. We’ll see how things sort out. It’s such a short pin I was having a hard time finding something off the shelf, it would be easy enough to machine though. The tolerances on the stock ones don’t seem especially tight.
