I have a 62 beetle been working on that possibly has some cam-crank timing issues. Engine was rebuild 25 years ago by the local VW flipper at the time who is notorious for screwing things up. I have pretty much exhausted all other possible things to check, the last was the cam-crank timing. I can easily pull the gen stand, fuel pump, oil pump etc...but was hoping to avoid tearing this all the way down to the crank. From a spare bare case I have sitting here looks like it "might" be possible to see the marks through the gen stand opening. Anyone know if this or another trick is possible?

Almost positive you could check it if you pull the oil pump out. Pull the pump and use a bore scope or a little mirror.

You could also compare the orientation of the slot in the cam to the crank, especially if you have a degree pulley. The oil pump slot in the cam is in line with the timing mark on the cam gear.

I personally haven’t done either of these, but to me it seems like the most viable method

You can see it even with the pump removed.

I always take a picture before closing the case. I let's me sleep at night.

If you remove oil pump and put crank at exactly TDC (compression stroke #1 cylinder) the oil pump slot should be at a exact 45° angle...

Confused there for a second. So you can NOT see it at all even with the oil pump removed. No mirrors or anything would do it correct?

I have read this but it seems like it might be vague enough that would be difficult to see if you are only one tooth off...or is this pretty precise?

You can check the cam TIMING with the engine assembled.

Overlap should be near centered around TDC, you can tell that just with your eyes and hands if it's close or way off.

Google how to "degree a cam" to see if the cam is timed right.

With 50(?) teeth on the cam gear that equals a bit over 7 degrees per tooth, so it should be pretty noticeable.
