Hi guys
My chassis number is:
429040130
It definite starts with 429 but I can’t see any references to any Type 4 chassis numbers starting with 429.
I also have the VW Birth Certificate and it’s on there and says that it was built on 21st March 1969.
Can anybody explain this for me?
Cheers

Type 41 is two door 411 or 412. Type 42 is four door 411 or 412. Type 46 is variant/wagon.
Those are your first two digits. The third should be the year. So you have a 1969 four door?

Sorry, I should have just posted these because it helps:
Here is the table of type 4 models:
This is the list of equipment/part number prefixes based on engien equipment class:
That one is interesting because it answers a few questions about part number prefixes in the parts book that appear to lead you to other VW CARS as the source of the part.

yeah - those body tag (production plate) numbers tell a nice story.
its the build plate basically and matched the build sheet to the chassis or body.
the cars did not get vin numbers until the end of the the production line when fully completed.
first two numbers are the week of the calendar year.
(any model year will be the second half of the calendar year pre the model year and the first half of the calendar year matching the model year).
third number is the day of the week. monday =1 friday =5.
fourth number = the factory. different factories have a different number.
ie 9 = the karmann factory where the ghias, beetle cabs, 914s and scirroccos were built. all those have a 9 as the fourth number.
im guessing the 411 is built at wolfsburg at this time in 69?
1 = wolfsburg if my memory is correct but could be wrong.
used to have a list of the factory numbers from 914 research.
the last three numbers can get a bit more interesting depending on the model.
at karmann each particular model on the production line was assigned two numbers for the third last. the first of those two numbers in sequence would notate the first 100 cars for the day. the last two is the chronological number of that first 100. ie 50 as the last two numbers would be 50th car of the day.
if the number exceeded 100 for a day then the third number would flip over to the next number of the two assigned. which was rare at karmann, generally just under 100 cars of each model came off the karmann line per day.
not sure how those last three numbers worked at factories with higher production output but am guessing (with good reason) its a straight out chronological output number theoretically up to 999.
with that production plate number greg will be able to work out the date his car was made and the nth 411 of the day off the line. |

Hello Wonkipop,
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
All early VW 411 I know (MY 69) from August 68 until July 69 have in the body tag the „5“ at fourth number.
Could be the hall or line in Wolfsburg. I have seen later reference tags with a „4“ and „8“. The production of the VW 411/412 moved later to Salzgitter.
