the Logo on the foot will tell you…if its Bilstein Vigot then it fits late Split/Zwitter/early Oval cars from 52-55
Bilstein only is 55-57 Oval, the early ones 150-250$ later ones about 50-150€, depends on condition _________________ 1948 Type1 #1-078021 sold

thanks for everyone who contributed to this thread (found using "search").
so i won't use up a "start separate thread", what happened to the Bilstein Rally Monkey Jack style? my '58 had one but it might no have been original. |

What a fantastic thread, so much good info here .
I have an oval jack in my '59, I *thought* it was correct .
Now I have to wade through my rusty junk to hopefully find the correct one . _________________ -Nate

OK what have i done i bought an old Bilstein Vigot bug jack out of France From Fred here in the classifieds on June 2nd ....it arrives on the 23rd , not a bad wait ......i met the mailman out at the box excited to get my hands on it ......it was pretty dirty a little rusty with a few spray bomb paint jobs making it hard to tells its original color ......i just used some car cleaner and blew out some chunks of grease . i was able to crank it all the way up and down , but thats with no weight on it , you cant see the top gear to see what condition its in but i think im OK ..........from what i can see here its a 49 50 version of this jack ......i dont have it handy but i have one of the early jack bags i think to fit this jack ill have to find that .......i snapped a few pics for ya to look over here ..... i have also looked over 1950 51 and 52 and 53 owners manuals looking at the jack photos . trying to gleen some info there .....
after bust a basic cleaning and some compressed air i can crank it top to bottom just with my fingers easily , no binding anywhere . smooth action but with no weight yet .
here is the pic from the add

looks like you got what you bought, and the fact it works is certainly a big plus. |

i am no jack expert . i do see some info of this very jack here the samba being 49 50 . so i look over a bunch of original owners manuals and it shows something different .......
46 manual doesnt show one , these are taken from 51 and 52 owners manuals , 53 goes to the next generation of jacks . mine isnt anything like these 2 ??? its likely i have the wrong generation for my 51 ?
this is shown in 1949 and 50
this is from 51 - 52

went n found my jack bag . looks like my jack is too long for it , but if you look at the jack from the 50 51 owners manual - those are shorter jack like the threaded portion can be threaded in to make it shorter . mine is just 1 size and doesnt shorten like that .....so maybe i have the wrong bag , and the wrong jack . but i think im getting pretty close for my 1951 ???

Q: were jacks ever meant to go in a bag?
i thought it was just for the lug wrench, sparkplug wrench, and loose tools.
Q: if some cars had those little spring clip holders, how beneficial would a bag be?
thx

Sid , its to my understanding , the early bugs with OUT the jack clip used bags . not to be confused with the tool roll . i think some years bus's also Bagged there jacks .
i cant find a fact sheet on this ? LOL
i spent some time with pics n small screwdrivers picking out all the hardened grease n dirt . its looking pretty clean inside ........im tempted to paint it , but was it originaly BLACK ? i cant tell from whats left on it .
OK i had to go give it a try and it worked just fine on this 70 , kinda hard to tell but i got the rear wheel off the ground here on asphalt , the jack works no problem !!!! way easier than i had expected

well then . . . . i see an aftermarket cottage industry popping up.
could submerging the jack in a rubbermaid container with some type of degreaser save you any work?
although it sounds like a labor of love for this long coveted accessory.
if you are seeking opinions, i say "paint it."
but just like polishing an old penny, i don't know if it will compromise resale interest. but if you're going to keep it for your own enjoyment, make it your own.
isn't that what hobbies are all about?
can i get an Amen? |

im a Coin collector so i know better there < but i think jacks fall into a different category i just asked the seller Fred if he knows what color they were originally . im not apposed to painting it . i have an original hand crank motor starting arm all nicely painted and id like the jack to match it under the hood .. |

WW sells repo jack bags for the Bus in numerous colors , but i havent seen any made for early bugs .
on a bus the jack arm collapses so they use a skinnier bag , a bug jack wont fit those .
