That pink (red) Square is a 72 or 73.

The blue one is most likely a 67 in VW Blue. This is based on back up lights, the rear reflector housings, and the hatch script and hatch type. 1967 is the last year of this style hatch. The 'bolt on' light housing started in 68.

The 67 has a lot of 'one year only' parts but almost every model year of Type 3 has some 'one year only' parts - some lasting months in production, not even the whole production year. The 1967 has the most 'one year' parts, in my opinion, but it seems to have been a very popular year as well. I've had several 67's and never really had a problem finding parts for them.

Depends upon how close to stock you're going to stay...but don't get too wrapped up in one model year or a few odd parts unless they're part of specific appeal to you.

Josh makes a good point. You will find this to be true with Type 3's more so than with the Beetle.

This is my greatest fear. I've seen the crazy variations of the 66/67 Beetle turn signal/emergency switch relay along with the dash switches, door handles, wiring, etc. to know better than to try and tackle a one year only vehicle that must be updated to keep it on the road (quoting from Seinfeld: "not that there's anything wrong with that").

My first 66 Bug was really bastardized: 66 body, 1500 "H-code" engine, 68 heater channels (along with the same bulkheads) with new floorpans and 67/68 electricals. I converted the engine to 1600, then to 1641 using "big bore" cylinders, added Cofap remanufactured dual port cylinder heads (several times), single Dellorto 40mm Bugpack intake setup (horrible) later changed to dual Weber 34ICT carbs. I removed the thermostat and fan housing flaps like an idiot and added a Thunderbird brand glass pack muffler. This engine ended up in the 75 Beetle with more mods like single QP muffler.

If you're going to keep it bone stock and don't want a bunch of one year only parts - steer clear of the 67 Type 3. I think almost every year has some one year only parts though...

Which areas are you more concerned with having to find one year only parts?

Think I'll stick with a 69 with 4 speed. I really have liked the IRS in my last two Beetles.

I've been browsing thru the classifieds. Glad I kept all my VW specific tools Smile

That looks great. Cool
I was going to say, that IRS can be swapped into an early car, but nobody mentioned it yet. My 65 Notch has an IRS swapped in (I did it myself). It's currently got a super beetle trans axle in it for the gearing (3.88:1) which helps with fuel economy and ride. I also converted the car to 12 volt, as it's not hard to do. Getting all the bulbs is the the thing. In my case I used a 1 year only wiper motor (from a 70) do do that part of the conversion. I'm running a generator and an old style VR in it, and haven't had any issues. I built my car the way I wanted it, as I like to drive it.

Car was made August 13, 1968 per the VW Certificate. It has IRS, dual baby Webers, Pertronix distributor and coil, Vintage Speed exhaust.

I’m trying to decide which wheels to get. Sprint Stars, 914 alloys or Riviera alloys are some ideas. I also like ATS 5 spokes with black background.

Car will get repainted L30 Royal red. I might do a two tone with white (Lotus?) roof.

Do a search of this thread for https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=245654 (direct link)
As this IS the tire and rim thread for type 3s. Most of these combos have been worked out, and some of the users discussed what mods needed to be done before they fit.

Nice choice! I have two Royal Red '69s here (along with 3 Peru Greens! Somebody help me... Anxious )

Hit me up if you decide to go back to fuel injection on this. Have fun with it.

Wow! It looks like it took seven years for you to finally pull the trigger on a car that pretty much matches your parents' original, which would have been my suggestion all along! I would do it as an exact match to the one you remember.

I almost bought a nice beige '68 Squareback that exactly matched the one my dad had, which would have been a memory trigger for sure, ultimately deciding to stick with the simplicity of bugs, but it was a hard call!
