Added some led strip light for footwell lighting utilizing the Uniwerks retro gauge pod. Also added some lights for under the bench seat. ran some lights so I can see in glove box too and lights up my secondary auxiliary electrical behind glove box.

Finished it. Bleeded the brakes, taking her down for a long random and bumpy drive this weekend to settle in the new suspension and will get her aligned next week. Up next: fixing some rust and installing self made liftkit for the roofrack-poptop combo.

Sometimes it's the little stuff.
My sliding door handle was sagging and loose. Took it apart and found it was cracking. I actually remembered that I had bought a NOS many years ago. After much searching, I found and installed it after switching the lock cylinder over. Replaced the inner foam seal and plastic escutcheon. Like new, nice and tight.
But then this.
Fortunately, I had some used spare handles and dropped them off with a powder coater I know.
This is a great guide to disassembly.https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4667417&highlight=#4667417
I switched the lock cylinders over and installed the re finished handles. I also degreased and lubed the locks prior to installation. There was not a trace of foam in my OE handles, was that added later? Also, there is a thin plastic ring or seal on the lock cylinder. One of mine was cracked and I couldn't find an o-ring thin enough. Couldn't find one being offered anywhere so I assume its NLA.
Much better.

The cracked handle can often be prevented with the awesome derlin bushing available on eBay. Since you 3d print, I have made them that way and they seem to work well. Likely not as long lasting as the awesome derlin ones but there's are available at the push of a button. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Lift assist kit on a budget. Bought 2 cheap 600Nm 40cm gas struts, made two simple brackets out of stainless steel of stuff that I had lying around. Added two rod end bearings to connect to the bolts holding the roofrack.
Works like a charm after bending the brackets inwards a little. |

Finally made Aluminet front door window screens:
Warm/hot-weather camping should be more pleasant now! Test-run will be this weekend. _________________ ~Kamz

Kamz,
I think I see your usual magnets sewn into the hem. Looks good! Do you have radiation deflecting tint on your wing vents? Do you open those often while camped, as to why not covering them too?
Cool look. Now studying "Aluminet".

Yes, all glass is tinted (with clear ceramic on windshield). The vent windows only open 90° (virtually useless), so I rarely open them (need to do some modifying). Plus, it's far easier, quicker to sew a rectangle than a triangle.
I got the idea of making these when I stopped at Lake Havasu a few years ago. It was hot (although not summertime hot) and the wind was blowing. I put the fiberglass screens on, but the sun was baking the front of the van. Perfect situation for Aluminet versions. _________________ ~Kamz

How is Aluminet at keeping insects out? Is there a chance you'd want both Aluminet and fiberglass screen material in the screen?
Regardless, the Aluminet looks like neat stuff for blocking heat. _________________ - Jim

Apparently it's used in greenhouses and it's effective at blocking pests. _________________ '87 Syncro

Have not relied on for bug screening, but VERY effective for moderating temperature in hot, sunny conditions.
Aluminet, ARB-knockoff awning & portable fans made this trip tolerable for a coupl’a Minnesota folks!

Should be fine for insects, except perhaps for tiny, no-see-um types. If need be, I'll just pop the fiberglass versions on the inside.
Aluminet is fantastic for blocking the heat of the sun while allowing airflow. I've got a 6x8 panel for the awning and such.

Removed the Passat black rims with the snow tires, and installed the All Season Michelins which are mounted on the Mefro Silver rims. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

It started with paint on a rack extension to secure a Burger on the pop-top - and went downhill to a stuck intake valve...
1- low power, unburnt gas smell, rough idle, bogging under load
- changed o2-sensor: mostly the same
2- oily plug on #4, (light grey on all others), oil stays with the cylinder (spark plug cleans-up / fouls according to location in 10min driving)
3- spark ok (spark plug off, visual)
4- no change on idle when spark wire removed on #4
- at this point it is clear that #4 does not combust
5- no change on injector electrical wire swap with #3
6- injector off: same pattern both injectors on #3 and #4
- changed both orings - slight cracks
- injection is fine
7- compression: all sparkplugs off, at least 3 full turns
- order is 1-2-3-4
- dry test: 150-120-120-0 (yup: zero on #4...)
- with oil in #4: bumped-up to maybe 10-15psi on dynamic cranking (10 seconds cranking, my tester is equipped with a schrader check-valve directly at the head connection)
8- valve cover off: rocker is loose when valve is not activated on intake #4. All adjusters are fine and seem to be in the same adjustment position as when the motor was rebuilt.
- at this point: stuck-open intake valve on #4
Time to take a few steps aside and think
At least, the paint on the rack extension is almost dry now... |

Wrapped up a couple projects. First installing a CR-V fold down center console using rivnuts and a piece of wood painted brown as a stand off to maintain passenger swivel. The other is replacing the cone filter intake that came in the RMW conversion kit with a stock Subaru air box. Ran some intake line up into the driver side vent pillar from air box. Heading out to Utah towards the end of May and have never trusted the cone filter let alone in an area like Moab. Major plus is that airbox definitely quieted down the intake. Still need to drop my fuel tank again to deal with a leak at the fuel sender on fill ups, but things are coming along.
