I have mixed tops and bottoms. don't see why you cant .
here is another for the thread early HUF pre-solex . to early 46 I think?
notice the top is completely flat around the screw holes.

? Any interest in the American, Italia or other non VW made fuel pumps ? .
I have a few and don't need them, I'm getting older and my son will scrap out all my vintage VW parts when I die, not sure if I should just bin them or what ? .

Progressive refinements not exactly fully detailed on the changes... lots of gaps between 1953 and 1956

| It looks like December 58 was the change to the filter/screw on top of the fuel pump. |

| for a 36 horse 1958-59 fuel pump... though they're basically the same fuel pump, the one on the left has more "Made in W. Germany' stamps than the other. The right version , does say "Made in W (VW logo) Germany" on the top. Maybe a later manufacture date? |

Here are some pics of early fuel pumps to supplement this thread. From left to right in chronological order (to the best of my knowledge):
- Kdf fuel pump with cog wheel, production probably ended when Solex couldn’t supply them anymore in 1945.
- Aluminum fuel pump without any manufacturer marking, note the rough surface finish due to the sandcasting method
- Diecast aluminum fuel pump, HUF marking on the bottom part
- Diecast zinc fuel pump, HUF marking on the bottom part
- Regular 8 mm 25 hp Solex fuel pump for reference
Best regards
Jan

Some good information on the early 356 fuel pumps and the 36hp pumps in general.

On my Nov 1 built zwitter, which seemed to have all the correct original engine parts, I restored the fuel pump with serial number 764520.

Don't fergit' about the legendary clear-top filter pump rarest-of-the-rare accessory, adds 13 donkey power.

I'm trying to guess when they changed from the 36hp shorter outlet spout to the taller one (before the addition of the extra filter screen) I came across a beautiful July 57 which has an all original engine. It had the taller outlet fuel pump with case date 20-6-27, and Fuel pump 3181447. Another friend has a long spout version with serial number 3156534 which is 24,913 earlier. It looks like they were making about 16,000 beetles a month, (plus busses) so I'd estimate these taller neck fuel pumps were at least on June 57 beetles, maybe up to December 1958.
There's a question though, as progressive refinements says there's a change in June 1958 to a longer output.... I've seen quite a few of the longer neck versions, and it would be hard to believe it's only a five month production. |

Could this "flat top" fuel pump be from a Porsche? I got it from a box of parts from my dad, who had a 1958 Porsche engine. |

Great thread and timely too as I'm getting ready to rebuild a coupe of fuel pumps.
Where can I find the correct screws for the top plate? |

Not at all hard to believe. There are some distributor versions that were in production for less than a month. _________________ Roads Scholar

It doesn't seem to weird given that they changed the entire style by adding a filter.
Maybe Hans had been arguing for the filter add for years and finally got it approved. _________________ How to Post Photos

Here are two I have that are both zwitter 25hp, not sure why one has the odd adapter fitting.

I just rebuilt three 36HP pumps for a customer and took some photo's for reference. One is the late 1958 version with the tall neck on the outlet. I do see a lot of these tall new 1958 pumps as well.
The 1956 pumps have the identical base to the 1958 pump as the rounded hump for the screw in rocker holder/plug at the base of the lower section of the pump was gone.
