Been looking for one for a long time, no urgency was had, but lastly found one locally!
It had been sitting for a long long time, when it was said that the owner of the house died and everything in the house and garage was sold. This ´49 block and a 51 complete engine. My contact parts seller bought both and he knew I was looking for an alu ´36hp´casing, so I got the chance of buying it from him.
Very happy with this little gem. Did they really cast one half of the casing on one day and the othe half the other day?
As I see two dates: 28-2-49 and 1-3-49 suggesting two separate dates this parts were made?
Also facsinating is the word 'Austausch' (which translates to 'switch-over', trade-in your old engine or just 'rebuild' in english I guess) stamped on the generator pedastal.
Does the engine number match the date of early march '49 on the casing?
The samba records do not go that much into detail this far back iirc.
Why my interest you may wonder? Well, since the landspeed record breaking red Ghia of the late Mr. Vittone used one in a turbocharged 36hp-class engine, my interest to build something blown from one was never gone!
Now have these Denzel replica heads been cast yet?

Cool find!
As far as casting dates, maybe on Mondays they did left case halves, and Tues. the right sides, castings can be made anytime and stockpiled, then castings would go to the machining phase of the mfg. process where they would pull 2 halves out and machine the 2 separate halves, then they become married, could be weeks or months after they were cast, this would be typical of a mfg. process
still done that way today. _________________ 73 Type 181

Thanks for your reply, I was indeed wondering how that worked, manufactering wise as I had never seen two dates on cases and these super old ones did have that.
If anyone still has a new 69,5mm (WW) in stock, pls let me know. _________________ '75 SB 1303 2,4ltr T4 turbo: 10.58 @ 129.9mph

The number stamp shown on the side of the generator stand is a KD engine number sequencing (VW exchange engine serial number 198357). Based upon the list found in the June 2001 VVWCA newsletter the engine was factory rebuilt in August 1957. ( the "1" is faint but visible, if the number was 98357 then it would have been rebuilt in July 1955) "P" stamped engines have had crankcase jointing surfaces refaced and the bores (crankshaft bearings / pulley, camshaft and oil pump housing) reamed out to standard size. "O" stamped engines have had crankcase main bearing bores reamed to an oversize and fitted with the appropriate oversized bearings and crankshaft pulley.
Check the following thread for some good information on VW’s Kassel rebuilding works.
