The page rolled over so I reposted for continuity.
Pulled the Westy into the garage for redo of leaky windshields.
Progress report: Cut and pulled outer rubber to see why it leaked. I didn't cut too deep as I didn't want to cut into good paint.
I installed these back in 2008. The sealant had failed completely, dried out and turned to dusty clumps. The rubber was still amazingly strong.
The inside of the windshield rubber tore away after a shallow slice all the way around. Then I merely put the glass away to clean later.
Using soft scrapers I cleaned the 3M off then wiped with Coleman Fuel.
Inside rust is minimal and will be ok once sealed by rubber. Outside I ground the bad rust with carbide cutter, masked, then filled with marine epoxy.
Final sand with Fingernail Sanding Stick Pieces.
Nothing shows beyond the seal lip except one tiny spot so no pains necessary. The marine epoxy is bullet-proof on its own.
Now to find some goo and reinstall with Lind's Molded Corner Seals. |

In a huge random act of kindness
He offered me his 3/4 full tube of 3M if I wanted to use it. How Samba-Bro is that.
Amazon is sending me the CLR 7711. |

Got the windshield all ready for install with the CRL7711. Decided to do a dry run for procedure finalization and fitting.
Practiced the first lip for sealant without opening caulk.
Installed the pulling cord. I use a fat nylon Samson Braid with paraffin on it. I found that a BIC shell works fine without even putting the cord inside. It actually works better.
The dry run practice install went lovely with the cord pull a cinch.
Took all out and got ready for the goop. I decided to make a glass grip so I can walk the glass over, lift it up and under the eyebrow, then lower the bottom edge onto goop I will put on the bottom opening and sides. Also goop around the outer seal perimeter on the rubber as stated in The Bentley.
The tool worked great on a practice run with a little water to help suction.
Couldn't get a photo and hold the glass.
Then I opened the CRL7711 and started the 1st beads. I couldn’t get any photos of the action but it was a complete disaster. The CRL7711 is runny like thin cake decorating gel and dries instantly. The next hour was rescue the rubber with cleanup cleanup cleanup.
Now I ordered CLR 7708 to see how well that works. |

Looks like you put goop in glass channel of seal, yes? I know my bay has a spot where a crack in the dry rubber lets water in around the glass, so the goop is good insurance against that. You obviously used more than I did, since I had some left in the tube :) _________________ Craig K

Also helps to keep water from the lower edge of the windshield where it degrades the plastic layer from transparent to white. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Here is the day after clean up after installing the windshields. Far from done but I want to see if the CRL7708 will firm and dry a little. Before I call the CRL7708 a direct replacement for the 3M80509 it will have to clean up much easier than it has so far.
I can’t say enough about the VW 211845121A / BBT 7400 windshield seal Lind is providing. I was skeptical at first of the butt seam and the strength of the rubber. After having installed them I can assure you they are tough. Pulling the string for me usually incurs some stuck patches that usually rip the rubber grip bead; not these seals.

Yes. In the past I've done them totally au natural, lower corners only goop, all but the glass channel seal, and like this time. If you can handle the cleanup the Hail Mary splooge everywhere is a sure seal. I'm betting the Lind seals would seal for a long time just dry fit too. |

Especially in 57 year old glass that has been outdoor its whole life. The last time this Westy had windshield seals was 2008. |

Really very nice write-up and photos on your "goop sealant process" and your review of the BBT pre-shaped cornered windshield seals acquired through Lind! Can you give us an idea of what a L/R pair those seals cost? The moment I ever need to redo any of my three Split-Buses windshields, I'll go thru Lind to get the seals!

This photo has an optical illusion that the pulling cord is at the top of the window; it is not. The actual cord is about a half foot above the child-cot bracket. The rest of the string in that photo is a reflection of the real string.

NOS Volkswagen made seals have the diagonal seam in the top middle and formed corners.
Most aftermarket ones have a perpendicular seam are just hoops with no formed corners, so you can put the seam wherever you like. The corners will suck, and the seam won't look original.
The seals I sell have formed corners and the seam in the middle of the bottom. Maybe you could sand down the seam and make a new diagonal seam in the top middle if it is that important to you.
I only sell the best quality seals with formed corners. Lesser quality ones that still look wrong are available from parts suppliers that sell lesser quality parts for less money. _________________ .

Surely you've had a chance to water test your windshield project by now. So what's the verdict? _________________ Never argue with an Idiot. They'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. |
