I have seen 102 watts from my Renogy 100w panel. It's fairly normal to get more than 90 watts from it in peak sunlight. _________________

That AO Lithium battery was too inexpensive to pass up for the Syncro. Down the rabbit hole I go...

I'm sure this topic has been talked about before. But I found it easy and cheap to just cut the swivel. I never swivel the driver seat anyway.

I just ordered one on a black friday deal for $149. Insane price.
My lead-acid house battery is 7 years old so it's time anyway.
So here I go jumping down the LiFePo rabbit hole with the rest!

Looks like they may be sold out again!
Good thing I ordered an extra a few weeks ago.
It arrived in under a week.

bummed... went to finally order this and as other have mentioned, they are out of stock. I reached out to the manufacture to see when they might be back and got this disappointing reply:
"Hello, we currently have no plans to restock, sorry." |

Well everybody, It was reported to me on Samba that this thing fits, but a better description would be that it *almost* fits. i have been here before and learned a long time ago on other vws to modify the tech, not the bus, so i dont regret it in the future that i hacked up a classic for a trendy new piece of tech.
So this AO lithium ion battery is a very close fit, but i saw on here one solution of someone hammering away at their battery box to gain the couple millimeters and opening a body seam in the process and decided i didnt want to go that route. I am currently prepping the car for paint and dont want to invite new problems since its Syncro and is super rust free, so i started looking at this battery....
There's an inch or more of clear space above the control panel and heat dissipator inside.
So i pulled out the tablesaw.... and the lid of the battery...
and flipped the part i cut off to provide lower profile in the battery compartment.
Then used the soldering iron as a plastic welder....at 750 degrees worked best.
It is hooked up to solar and so far works fine. i do not however have loads on it to monitor for any temperature impacts to my 'adjustments'. The battery now fits with 3/4" inch to spare, mounted sideways. room for soundproofing on the wheel well box.
Voided the warranty? surely. But i am invested in this battery 169 dollars ( a lot less than the car investment) . It seems like a responsible abuse of technology.
Cut the syncro? Nope.
Whenever this battery dies, the next generation from AO or another manufacturer will surely be smaller. I think they already have the next gen out, and that is the reason for the fire sale on these units.
Hopefully this helps others not chop up their vans to make this work, but may be dangerous and irresponsible attack on a plastic box. It is now kind of a hybrid of unit battery and custom set up. i am not a battery nerd i just wanted something for a reasonable price with good capacity for a house battery that fits under the drivers seat, as the title of the thread suggests. |

Nice work.
The wasted space inside the battery boxes is annoying. It's good that the space obsessed have options to either cut the box or build a DIY battery. _________________ - Jim

Are these going to be affected by the increased tarriffs? Figuring probably will! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Their 200W portable solar panel looks like a great deal too, $120.

Section 301 tariff rates for batteries were already approved in October to increase from 7.5% to 25% in 2025 (the start date is difficult to determine).
https://www.twaice.com/industry-technology/tariff-section-301
https://www.google.com/search?q=section+301+tariff...s-wiz-serp
There's nearly endless chit-chat on battery prices and tariffs at DIY Solar with plenty of noise. The general sentiment is if you need a battery in the next six months buy it now because prices will likely go up.

This looks like a great solution. Could you post some pictures of how it's mounted in the van when you get some free time? How did you secure it into place? Thanks! |

those aolithium 100ah bluetooth batteries are incredible, so cheap and SO good
they can handle 1C (100a) charge and 2C (200amp!!!!) discharge rates (notice the huge copper at those terminals).
i have ran them since they first came out
i have 2 x 100ah aolithium batteries in each of my 2 bay window campers
and 4 x 100ah aolithium going into my new vanagon build
and i had another 2 that went to my shopmate (e.g. from my bus, and then got replaced with new ones) when he needed batteries for his toy hauler trailer in a panic/jam right before going out to glamis .. still working great for him too ...
so techincally, ive bought 10 from those guys
they have been awesome to deal with - i received 1 doa and they sent a replacement right away with no fuss and told me to keep the old one.
when i first ordered my 2nd pair for my other bay window, they immediately called me with an engineer in china on the phone to make sure it was going to work..i believe they had updated the firmware between my 2 first orders and wanted to check in. how often do you see that kind of behavior from a company nowadays? so awesome.
i am working on a replacement lid so that they just drop in on the vanagon normal spots behind the seats, just got the first attempt back from laser cutting. hoping to have it finalized very soon, should make for a VERY easy 200ah of lithium in the vanagon typical battery holders
my t3 is a diesel so i already had a battery tray in the engine bay...also a 2nd aolithium fits perfectly (sideways) behind the taillight, right next to that tray, with no effort.
so, 200ah in the bay and 200ah behind the seats.
should be an easy path to 400ah with zero loss of storage space.
anxious to see how it does...and how my VW MK4 "250a" alternator feels about it :)
also..... i ran those two different dual aolithium setups in multiple years of DAILY driving on both my bay windows starting in February 2022 - both with high amp alternators (~160a on a type 4, 270a on a subaru), no isolator/split charge/DC-DC crap, just raw dog wired straight together and straight to the alternator running the camper loads (e.g. 12v fridge/water pump/heater) and regular vehicle wiring together ..
no issues at all, unlike the renogy batteries (and several replacements they sent me) before them (although they were good enough to refund my original purchase price which was almost like an investment, being that the old renogy price was much higher than the new aolithium price) ..
and i even ran the aolithium pair in my 78 riviera from san diego to brooklyn new york, toronto, etc and back...through terrible rains etc, with them both mounted in the engine bay. (the renogy batteries couldnt take the moisture, despite their IP-rating...those RJ45 ports never sealed properly)
cheaper than an optima battery yet LiFePO4 with bluetooth BMS monitoring built in. perfect size for T2/T3 (soon, with a little help). impossible to beat.
P.S. i like this app better than the one aolithium provides
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/xiaoxiang-bms/id1375405426
it's a very common off the shelf/standardized BMS they are using on the Aolithium...the "JBD"
here's a teardown from a dude who knows what's up
Link
and here he runs a 200A+ sustained load on it from full until its flat, and it doesn't even catch on fire ;-)
Link
these same batteries were like $650 not long ago |
