|

Hi
I have a 1969 VW 411. The turn signal works, but doesn't flash.
I have bought a new relay, different shape than the old one, but wired it to the fuse box instead. Turn signal still doesn't flash.
What could then be wrong or have failed?
There is 11,5V on terminal 49 and 49A on the relay when I use the multimeter. There is about 0V on terminal 31 and KLB.
The turn signal just light up and doesn't flash. It's the same when I use the Hazard light switch.
Thanks in advance.
Regards Steven. |

You say "wired it to the fuse box".....unless there is a different fuse panel in the 1968, it should plug into the bottom.
The closest wiring diagram I have is for Euro 411 from August of 1971.
It lists relay J2....as having 3 significant wires.
There is a brown ground wire that is terminal 31 and goes to the instrument cluster and connects in a fork to the ground that supplies the instrument cluster lights. From there it goes to terminal 31 on the turn signals lever at the steering column.
There is a white wire listed as +. It connects to the + on the emergency flasher switch
There is a blue and red wire that goes all the way to the other instrument and is what powers the turn signals indicators. This SHOULD BE a double wire. The other wire connected with it is connected to terminal #49 on the light switch.
So.....basically the + terminal (white wire) should be supplying power to the relay anytime the key is on. Also, when the key is off, a constantly powered terminal from the light switch supply's power to switch the relay back and forth.
I know I am over simplifying....but the only thing you can really do is look at the three wires (four really) plugged into your relay and follow them back to the other components.
Even in the US models and later models the diagram shows the same 3 connections and fl4 wires to the relay.

The original flasher relay plugs into the fuse box. The new flasher relay has the same terminals, but doesn't fit in the fuse box, so I just made for new wires between the fuse box and the relay.
There is power to terminal 49 and 49A, but I can't measure any on KLB and 31.
The turn signals are working constantly, but not flashing. The indicators in the instrument cluster is lighting up too. Also the hazard light switch is turning red when activated, but not flashing.
Low beam, high beam, wipers, radio, horn and blower motor is working, but I can't figure out what this problem is when it's not the relay that is bad. |

Let me think about this one. The relay is simple. It has + and - and a + transfered to the lights. It may help me to pull one of spare relays and take teh shell off and see what transfers to where. Ray |

Just a shot in the dark but here is what happened to me on my '73 wagon. My 4 way flasher switch was wonky, E3 on the wiring current flow diagram. The external body on this switch came loose and disturbed the internal workings. I could not repair it. This is a very complex little switch with many wire connections and the turn signals are wired through it. I had to get a replacement and everything worked again. I was lucky to find a good replacement.
