I pulled it out through the rear, but that reminds me I need to inspect (and likely scrape) the sealant around the inside of the front intake screens and reseal with some of that 3M marine goop. |

I'm in the middle of upgrading all of my tin right now as well... curious what you settled on for paint? Trying to decide if its worth the hassle to sandblast and powder coat... _________________ Erik S

Sheesh where is everybody? Less and less posters and the last 24 hours no one. Was there a nuclear war I didn't hear about?
I bled my '65s' brakes.
This time I put a wrench, hose and bottle on each wheel. Way easier for moving from wheel to wheel. Way harder to clean it all up. I'm now using Methyl Alcohol since Denatured Alcohol got banned in California. Very little fume affects but still need fresh air moving. |

Replaced the vinyl on rear kick panel (TMI) and cleaned up the aluminum. Retained OG board, clips and aluminum.

Found out that spare tire rim escaped the chroming-mania of the PO! Cleaned the wheel up (with studded tire!). Will replace tire and leave wheel as-is. Need to replace some hubcap clips. Amazing how sloppy the original painting was....

Powder coat is nice, but I sandblast and paint with Duplicolor Ford semi-gloss black (DE1635). Bake at 350' for 30-60 minutes or until the fumes stop to cure and harden. An outdoor grill works well for this if you don't want to stink up your house for a couple hours.
Rustoleum appliance epoxy also works well; also recommend baking/curing. _________________ WANTED:

Replaced the white LEDs in the tail lights with red ones from Stoddard; they lenses look far less orangey when lit now.

Looks good. I don’t see the red bulbs on the Stoddard site… could you post a link? _________________ Erik S

https://www.stoddard.com/vin90112506.html
They have a number of LED items for Porsche that will fit VWs.
https://www.stoddard.com/modern-led-lighting-for-vintage-porsches.html
I find their colors are much better than the LED you get off Amzn or SuperBright. On both my buses, I am using the festoons, license, front and rear turn/brakes, fog lights, a few of the instrument bulbs... those, not on the 70 obviously. And I took ther parking bulbs and put yellow magic marker on them in the 65's headlight buckets! They work 6 or 12v. We'll see how long they last, but I am assuming they are a bit higher quality than those weirdly-named brands off internet simply because of the crowd Stoddard is selling to.
As mentioned, Pantera Electronics sells LED-compatible flasher relays for many VWs.
https://www.pantera-electronics.com/bosch%20hella%20flasher%20relays%20with%20kbl.htm
No connection to either company (I did donate some flashers for Pantera Elec to study); just am happy with the products. Flashers are MUCH brighter now, and brake lights go on instantaneously.
I'm not sold on LED headlights yet. Bit pricey to experiment. _________________ Craig K

Parcel tray day. Thank god for my daughter's help.
Adding TMI mesh grey vinyl.... Made a rough paper template and then decided to glue it down in 2 steps: started with the front lip and half way up the back, and then figured out where to cut relief cutouts and glued the rest of the back. Added 2 seams in the vertical corners. Ended up with some minor wrinkles , but overall happy with the result and actually better than some OG versions I've see that were pretty rough!

Swapped out a California-style license frame
for one that matched the vibe of the truck better.
and then made it pay its keep by hauling 30 sheets of plywood and big bags of rockwool (but forget to take pic until amost done).

Installed all the new ceiling and rear interior wood panelling after finishing the sound deadening and thermal insulation over Thanksgiving weekend.
I finished all the birch panels with 3 coats of amber shellac.
Next up is the crown strip between the walls and ceiling, then getting started on the bench seats and table! |

Yes, not pictured is the tar mat covering roughly 30% of the walls, doors and roof before the bubble wrap went in. It’s impressive how much it changed the sound of the doors (tapping on the skin and opening/closing)! Well worth the time, effort, and weight! |
