I was digging through a garage and found this interesting case number. Looking at the forums it seems to predate anything on the technical forums. Just curious if anyone could date this engine?

That is a later case that has been stamped with a fantasy number. The asterisk usually denoted a rebuild or something like that. That number could very well be the VIN of a bus the engine was used in.

You can check the casting dates inside the hollow of the generator stand, but the number pad is definitely from a later 36hp case casting, not early 25hp

I agree, I read 20 - 0 127 177, what could mean Jan 1949. But prefix "20" means bus. But that time no type 2, was produced yet. It looks, ths case is not grinded in the area of the engine number.
So it was probably a later, new spare engine case. The punched in "star" looks not VW. More pics are helpful, if it´s 25 or 30 hp engine.

The 56 spare parts book lists engine case for 25 hp engines 111 101 025 and for 30 hp 111 101 025 A
