I’m going to repaint my 65 KG the original L560 Manila Yellow. I’ve got two conflicting inputs on the color of the primer I should use. One paint guy said use white. Another said that gray or black would make the color come out more in its proper tone than white.
Any advice on which path I should follow?
Thanks

Primer color shouldn’t matter. It’s the sealer you use just under the paint. Yellow takes a lot more paint than other paints do, so I’ve been told. And yes what the painter told you about light and dark is correct. |

Get the white tinted yellow. They can only add a tiny amount to the base, but it makes for an easier paint job. When I sprayed my yellow 70, 7 years ago, it took about 6 coats, to get the depth of color correct. That was on gray primer. Had I tinted some white, it might have been 4, maybe 5! _________________ Jimbo

BASF has a recommended grey shade for the undercoat color. Yellow is going to cover poorly, so you'll want to use whatever the paint manufacturer recommends. The Ruby car I just did is different colors even with 5 coats depending on which undercoat I used. For L560, Glasurit recommends a very light grey sealer/primer, L06. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

I have painted both a 78 and 66 westy in Daytona Yellow. The first was painted with a Grey bond- seal primer- one gallon of yellow did not cover the darker grey primer well. Second was primed in white and 1 gallon did complete coverage on the wholebus. So go with white or yellow-tinted primer for sure _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |
