Your innovations never cease to amaze me! My Kia has a push button like that. Very cool and well done. I truly wish all this work you're doing was on MY car.

…but you’ll be done before me…
Turned my attention to the turn signal and wiper stalks.
I believe they are OEM German units…at least the turn signal/headlight stalk appears to be since it’s made in Germany and has a large hole in the horn ring contact from years of spinning steering wheels!
I’ve read lots of post on Samba about repop turn signal units being crap and not canceling, not working, etc. Having an OEM German unit, I wanted to see if I could restore the horn ring contact. I checked the signal switch and it has a solid snap to the R or L and tripping the cancel tab snaps the lever back with authority. So, mechanically it appears to be functional. Worth a try restoring the contact
The horn ring contact is 0.010” thick copper…I bought some 0.016” copper from my local ACE hardware…
…made a template of the contact and cut out a piece to overlay the hole.
Supported the contact strip with a dowel and sanded the contact and cleaned w/acetone…
…tinned the contact and the overlay…
…applied heat to the overlay until the solder flowed out…
…SUCCESS!
Clean and lubed both wiper and turn signal controls (removed the unused windshield washer nonsense)…ready for intstall.

Nice. Are you going to lay down any sound deadening on those pans? |
Yes. Not going to slather it on every square inch…trying to keep it light (as you well know )…just enough to dampen the drum! Similar to what the factory did to the door and quarter panel skins.

Yeah, that should work. At least it will take away that hollow sound. _________________ I may not be the best, but when the top 10 get together, they all talk about me. |

Exactly. Inexpensive too at your local ACE.
I’ve got the OEM chassis harness cleaned and stripped of un-used wires. Should start wiring the chassis next week.
Any progress on yours?

Wiring has begun!
Very satisfying progress this week as I am actually starting to reassembly! Started the chassis wiring with one of the simplest circuits…the dome light.
I started with this pile…
…cleaned all the connections, unwrapped and checked all the wires for crispiness, and pulled out wires not used. Transformed the pile into sub harnesses… …and a pile of wires and connectors not being used…
The eBay dome light I bought came with a power male connector and 1 ground male connector. It relies on one mounting clip to ground against the body once installed for the ‘doors closed, light on’ circuit. I didn’t like that so I soldered on a male connector for a proper ground…
I eliminated the obnoxious ignition/door buzzer and it’s wiring so my dome light harness is simplified. I bought new door switches (2 RHS switches)…
‘Fished’ the harness thru the A-pillar to it’s mounting locn.
Installed the switches and made the connections…and it WORKS! All three switch positions on the dome light function as they should.
When I bought the car the motor was out, but it had a battery installed. I never tested the electrical system before I torn it apart. Battery looked decent, however I couldn’t find a date on it so didn’t know its age. I took it out, stuck it on this shelf, put a ‘tender’ on it and forgot about it. That was 3 years ago…
…now I’m going to use it for testing purposes. I’ll be using an Odyssey PC680 in the OEM position…it’s 10 lbs lighter
I also installed new door stops while I was there…
Little by little…

Thanks! One circuit a car doesn’t make…or something to that effect But you have to start somewhere.
The wifey appreciates the wiring efforts. She says it’s much quieter in the shop and doesn’t have to close the “air lock” (pocket door to the laundry room leading to the garage door)! I like it as I stay relatively clean and can now hear my radio…

Progress report:
Finished the wiring for the headlight and emergency flasher switches and the front headlight/park/signal lights…
I made a few minor changes to the frunk loom. I eliminated the wiring for brake master cylinder switches as I’m going to run a pedal actuated brake switch.
Also eliminated the brake warning light, fan motor, and ign buzzer wiring.
Changed the horn from ‘ignition-on hot’ to fused (#7) battery power so I can toot my own horn w/the engine off. I bought these horns…
…400 & 500Hz…the box says 110 dBA +/-3 dBA but I’m telling you it must be + because they are LOUD! I’m only going to use 1, the 400Hz unit.
I used a LED relay for the flashers because I’m using LED bulbs…
I have to mount my wiper motor because my plan is to have a separate fuse/relay panel (for the radiator fan, fuel pump and ign switch) mounted on the center bracket where the bonnet ‘rain collector’ mounted and I need check for interference.
On the non-wiring front, I bought an OEM German ‘68 non-vented decklid off of eBay so that I can now take full credit for H20SB’s comment…

Dude, have I ever told you I think you're smart? Excellent idea to get the deck lid with(out) vents. Obviously you don't need them with a watercooled engine, but I can't say i would have thought of that if I did the conversion.
H2OSB |
Turned out to be in better condition than I expected…and original paint too!
Of course I will chop off the hinge structure to convert it to a 911R flip-over style lid like I did with my other spare (see page 3).
Couple a weekends ago I was up at the Portland Swap Meet and bought an OEM Pope’s (R.I.P.) nose for $1…
…I’ll restore it and use it on the non-vented lid. It’s lighter than my ‘72s version ( ) and I really like the look.
That is all!

Great clean job on the frunk wiring. I really like the routing and the tape spacing is perfect.
I skipped the Portland Swapmeet this year on purpose.
I always end up spending more than I should on parts/tools... Last year I bought a Vintage 1967 JC Penny Bird mini bike that I sank another $600+ into. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Nice and neat on the wiring . I bought a supposedly train horn for mine. I hooked it up and it’s loud but not as loudas a train horn . Might have to get a real train horn . Glad you’re making progress on yours. Nice job . _________________ I may not be the best, but when the top 10 get together, they all talk about me. |

Thanks…guess my OCD is good for something…
I hear you about the PSM. Last year I bought two vintage tool boxes that I didn’t ‘need’…ended up giving them to the local Goodwill to reduce the clutter in my storage unit.

Thanks man! Trying to inspire your wiring
Train horn?
So you’re the guy! I had to change my pants after you went by!
Any progress on your locomotive?

Damn J, is this going to be a show car or something?
Love the pope's (R.I.P.) nose. Can't wait to see that mounted on the decklid.

been there, done that. It’s more go than show!
Yes…the nose on the lid…I’m thinking it will look pretty cool. My design ideas (Outlaw 1302 or 1302RSR) seem to be converging to cohesion…whatever that means.
Thanks for your reply…finally!
