I like the effect, but them I'm on old film/darkroom guy.
There are Photoshop filters for this. I think the later versions have this built-in. The older one I use lets me specify the particular Kodak B&W film, and also Kodachrome. But there are even better ones now.
I'm not sure what was used here. The first pic is fantastic, with matching patina on the Bus and the building! _________________ Current Fleet:

yeah, holding in 4th with bungee is more like hundreds of miles not thousands IMO.
on another note, why are those photos like that ? is this film ? some sort of hipster photo filter ? |
Hipster bullshit. Most the trip had been documented on 35mm and 16mm motion but none of it is developed.
I hear ya on hundreds I am torn on weather to risk it or ship a trans. Time will tell what I decide. _________________ -1957 Prairie Beige Oval

Why do you have a boat gas tank on your roof rack? |

Gas is far and few between on the cassias so we carried 12 extra gallons on the roof. And boy did we need it. Due to construction we hit a section that was almost 400 miles no gas _________________ -1957 Prairie Beige Oval

Will you take any ferries to cut down on driving? Did you try moving the shifter base forward yet? |

There was the epic post about the guy who drove his Bus from Detroit to AK and back.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=596474&highlight=detroit+to+alaska
He had some major mechanical issues (the transmission among others). He was helped out by locals I thought near Anchorage. Maybe there is a contact possibility for someone local to Anchorage in the post? |

You forgot the part where his bus rolled off the side of the road was fine enough to keep driving. Such an epic adventure.
Hope y'all figure it out Krust Krew!

I've been driving my Westy the past few years with a trans that pops out of 4th under acceleration. I just hold it from popping out when I go to get on it. Regular flat ground cruising, it stays in gear. I've been driving it this way now for about 1500 miles. Just another experience for your decision making. Hope it all works out for you guys!! _________________ Brandon |

My 66 bus did several thousand miles with a bungee on the shifter for 4th gear before I replaced the entire transmission and reduction boxes all at one time.
IF I were contemplating just removing and replacing the "center section" being the transmission, I'd have to think long and hard about tearing down the reduction boxes just to get them off the old transmission then back on to the new transmission....that's a lot of work. I'd probably throw the dice see how much shorter of a distance a car hauler would have to get it home IF it failed, there might be a lot of satisfaction IF you made it all the way.

Thanks for all the responses. Weighed my options and decided to send it. 1400 miles in and running smoothly. Treating this trans like it’s made out of glass and not pulling anything but flat in 4th. Fingers crossed for the rest of the journey. _________________ -1957 Prairie Beige Oval

I like your style, keep us posted, good or bad. Hope it’s good!
I would do the same if I was younger than the 83 I am now.
Wife & I were in Alaska from WI quite a few years back in our 78 stock Westy, six weeks, 6500 miles, slept in it every night and ate only one meal in a resturant.
Trip of a lifetime. Still have the bus & camp locally quite often. |

Flying saucers rock and roll!
My money is on you making it all the way home and then some til the time is right to fix things at your leisure in your home environment.

I've driven several thousand miles with a bungee. I have also driven from NY to Alaska several times [summer and winter] including last summer in our Bus. The chances of a breakdown are real and it's a long wait for a tow not to mention having a tranny shipped. I expedited a small part from Cali to Fort Nelson for our Bus on the Alaskan Highway last June and it only took 9 days! A ferry out of Whittier or a shipping container out of Anchorage is your safest bet. Nate [Frontier Finds] can help you out with info on a shipping container out of Anchorage. Good Luck! |

greenlakesgary such a cool drive. NY to Alaska is next level. Good on ya.
I am happily writing this from home. The bungee took me 3500 miles no issues. Thanks for all the help and responses. Excited to share the film photos once they are developed.
In total it was about 7k miles round trip. I calculated the hours... damn we spent some time hunched over. Lets say my but needs some rehab time.
All in all most beautiful drive of my life. Excited for more adventures.
Planning on driving the bus down to OCTO with the photos printed from the trip. See yall in so cal!

Congrats on making it all the way back on "da bungie". We had our fingers and toes crossed for you. Toughing it out saved you a bunch of transporting costs! Welcome home!

You made it back home! hooray!
fwiw, the tranny in my 61 pops out of 2nd under deceleration, since it was rebuilt in the nineties. I don't decal in 2nd that often, basically just on Shasta, but it surprises me once in a while. Not the best rebuild. lol. but other than that it works fine. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Congrats on getting her home!
As a former brother of the order of Bungee I had complete and absolute faith she'd get you home! Makes the trip even more special for when you reminisce years down the road!
Now, get busy and fix it. Don't push your luck you know haha! _________________ Never argue with an Idiot. They'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

Great to hear you made it back- hopefully not too stressful wondering if trans was going to implode. As others have said now would be a good time to look into what is going on before it gets too much worse.
Great pics, epic trip. Did you do a lot of miles on gravel roads and if so did your windshields and headlights survive?
Any pro tips you can offer up having completed this journey? |
