False alarm; the fellow I caught spewing oil didn't need the pull, but thanks for the info!
I'm sure the studs were used because the aluminum is a "softer" metal in terms of mounting something like that. Always studs when mounting to softer metal, especially when locating it might be awkward. SGKent; did your Spiders have the 27-thousand oil pan bolts when studs would have added years to your life? gotta love trying to stack your gasket and sealant and also line up invisible holes upside down.....

I am only 9 years late answering you Robbie because I missed it, but yes. The pans rarely leaked because they have so many small bolts holding the pan on. We had custom pans with wings on them, and doors inside plus a windage tray to control the pump from sucking air in hard turns. We learned that from an engine that exploded on one of the turns at the old Holtville track. It was turning about 10K and then it was shrapnel and about a 20' wide fireball. We went out to the turn after the races to collect souvenirs but all we could find were parts from about 20 other engines that did the same thing in that corner - so we had a special pan built to avoid sucking air on turns like that. The wings made it a real pain to put those bolts in 1/4 turn at a time with an open end wrench. _________________
