Set your timing at 30-32° BTDC @3800+ rpm, hose(s) off and plugged. This will mimic high rpm, full throttle operation when you are asking the most from your engine. It also eliminates the effects of a high idle on your timing that mikedjames mentioned. Do not reattach the retard hose if the retard can will not hold vacuum, just leave it plugged off.

You should be able to see an instantaneous spray of fuel into the throat of the carb when you blip the throttle. Only takes three hands to do. Smile

Imo, this is a perfect way to adjust ignition with a defective or wrong dizzy 1000 miles far away from home.

When original a vacuum dizzy is installed, it should be the better way, going original.

Full mechanical advance timing is always better as it removes a pile of variables that can be wrong with the distributor or carb. I have found the timing on these engines to be off hundreds of time over the years because people fail to time them right at idle. Even if I have a timing light available, I would much rather time an engine statically than to set the timing at idle when running a SVDA or DVDA distributor, I have just seen way too many engines with their timing way way off because someone blew it while timing them at idle. Sad

Hi. I think it’s all sorted now. The AJ vac on the side of the dizzy wasn’t holding the plate when I did the ‘suck’ test on the vacuum pipe. I have a AL dizzy here, so I performed the same test and seems ok, so I am using that dizzy. The flat spot seems to have gone now. I’ll probably send the new one back as it does look pretty cheap and nasty if I’m honest. What would anyone recommend on here for a substitute dizzy? I’ve heard good things about the 123?
Thanks for your help, people.

The 113 905 205 AL has the same advance curve as a 034. That is the one you will want to use.

You can buy rebuilt units for $200 to $300. I've seen all good things about the 123. You can program it to a specific curve which is nice.

Hi there , glad to hear it was because you had ended up with something like the combination of an 009 centtifugal advance distributor and a vacuum leak.

Nobody ever hears anything bad about the 123 .. the basic model acts like a new Bosch and the Tune models let you play around, plus the Bluetooth ones provide immobiliser and some instrument displays via an app.

Yes Mike. A knackered vacuum valve on the side of a AJ dizzy. Also, I don’t think the timing was spot on. Certainly revs ok now, though. Yes, I remember reading about the 123 on a smaller forum somewhere…can’t seem to find it now…ah well…

The build quality of the 113 AL is very good- one of the last before quality started to decline. It is the non North America equivalent of the 034 here in the states.
