I'm in the middle (probably beginning) of a big job on my bus, which is an 84 Vanagon Westfalia. I'm putting on the GoWesty rear disk brake conversion kit, new bearings, and thought I would take a look at the CV joints.

What do you all think, would you resuse these bearings or get new ones?

Also, what about the wear marks on the inside of the axle stub?

Appreciate the feedback, and I

In an emergency, I'd certainly reuse them trying to orient them so the drive was shifted to the opposite side. Thats some pretty good pitting on the outer race.

You could also just regrease and install and might get miles of trouble free use.

But proper fix would be new joints. I like to do them in pairs.

I kept mine as spares but they were not nearly as pitted as yours. Mine were already grabbing in reverse, hence the replacement.

I’m the cheapest guy on this forum.

Those are done. That huge divit is going to catch and hold your balls and give them a good yank, both literally and figuratively.

New grease and orienting the joints so the less worn side is taking the load will get you home, but otherwise those are junk.

It needs to be reiterated that a bad engine ground will quickly burn your CV joints because the starter current can ground itself through the axles causing sparking from the balls to mating surfaces which is encouraged by the round surface of the steel balls (corona effect). I even suspect this can happen inconsistently through the balls which may explain why some surfaces are untouched while others are totally pitted. The sparking would affect the ball and surfaces in closest proximity. This is why routine cleaning of the grounding strap contacts is so important. In fact there is a mod for this purpose with a ground strap connected directly from the starter mount bolt to firewall. One purpose it fulfills is to more easily monitor the condition of the grounding contacts.

Just chisel and/or grind off anything that appears like it might come loose and move on.

As noted, the stub is fine. Just clean it up.

The joints are shot. Maybe good for an emergency spare for when waiting on new parts.
