I had bought this Bosch generator brand new from J Bugs and it came without a generator shaft spacer. Without the spacer the pulley will not spin. The only spacer I have found so far is one for an alternator on Topline Parts, but it was too big. Two questions. Is there somewhere I can buy a new spacer? Is it normal for new generators to come with the spacer missing?

Not exactly sure of what spacer you are talking about.
Which item number?
EDIT: On second thought. I seem to remember a bushing/spacer of sorts that positions the forward pulley half a bit further back in order to clear the generator housing. Strange that it doesn't appear to be listed on this parts diagram. It would slide on to the generator shaft forward of the woodruff key. I think I had to cannibalize one off my old generator. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

I had a similar issue when I bought my car. The original owner sent a new generator with the car and when I installed it there were issues with clearance between the generator housing and the pulley. Unfortunately, I had already binned the old generator, so any spacer installed on it was lost. I solved the issue by purchasing and installing an alternator which came with a spacer.
Doesn't help the OP with his problem, but wanted him to know he's not alone in running into this problem. |

Without that spacer the pulley will get too close to the housing and rub against it.
Do you have your old generator? Maybe you can take it from there.
Otherwise, just ask the place you bought it from to provide one to you. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Shaft spacers (there's one at each end) are commonly missing from "rebuilt" generators/alternators. The generator spacers and front alternator spacer are sized 15 mm ID, 20.4 mm OD, 6 mm thick. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities
