Federal tax on gasoline is only $ .18
California state and local tax on gasoline is $ 2.20 + |
$2.20 state and local taxes in California, thanks Gov. Newsom (D). |
Costs money to keep the air clean. Some of you all don't remember or were to young to remember how bad the smog was in the 60's & 70's. In the LA Basin It hurt to breathe and you couldn't even see the mountains 10 miles away.
That said the cheap stuff here in downtown Ocean Beach San Diego is up to $4.27 cash and $4.47 credit. |
California's near 100% tax on gasoline does little to keep the air clean. Modern clean running cars, catalytic converters have really cleaned up the air. It aint the outrageous, regressive gas tax that did it. And yes I recall the days of smog alerts. But me paying near double for gasoline aint the reason the air is cleaner today. |
87 cents [1] is nearly half the price of gas in California? I wanna buy my gas there!
[1] California gas tax is 59.6 cents per gallon, plus the estimated cost for the California Carbon Cap and Trade rules is estimated to be 27 cents per gallon. All west cost US states except Alaska have adopted CA vehicle emissions requirements which affects fuel formulation and price (estimated to be another 15 cents). |
You left out sales tax. Then count the high income taxes which effect the price do to higher cost of employees at refineries, gas stations, gas truck drivers and other related jobs, then the high property taxes too then the ineffective tax of refinery building restrictions. It all adds up to a huge cost. much higher here than in many other states. It is a tax and regulation problem. It is near a 100% price penalty, a very regressive tax, slamming the less well to do very hard. |

Here's the gasoline tax in California breakdown:
54 cents in state excise tax: among the highest in the nation
18.4 cents in federal excise tax
23 cents for California's cap-and-trade program to lower greenhouse gas emissions
18 cents for the state's low-carbon fuel programs
2 cents for underground gas storage fees
An average of 3.7% in state and local sales taxes Most populated counties 7.34%.
I was born here and remember the smoggy days. As mentioned, it's the other things that have reduced the smog. Like homes in LA county had incinerators in the back yard to burn your trash.
As far as seeing the mountains, it's rare that you can see them except for in the winter. It is the dust in the air that prevents the view, not smog. It was like that when my grandparents were young. _________________ "You can lead an aircooled to water, but you can't make it drink"

A quick gas price check using AAA shows the current average price in California for regular gasoline is $4.649, so based on the average price and the average sales tax rate you gave, that is an additional 17.2 cents per gallon in CA gas taxes, bringing the average CA total to $1.156 per gallon.
Gas taxes in Washington state is right behind you:
49.4 cents per gallon state tax
18.4 cents per gallon federal tax
40 cents per gallon WA Carbon Tax [1]
$1.078 per gallon gas tax in Washington
Your gas taxes are only 7.8 cents per gallon higher. We don't have an income tax up here but to make up the revenue sales taxes and property taxes are high.
[1] WA auctions off CO2 allowances where exactly $50 per metric ton (2205 lbs.) in March 2025 auction. _________________

There are other state and local taxes and regulations that drive the price up more in California. Strict regulations that prevent new refineries from being built, special gasoline blend requirements which require expensive implrts of gasoline, very high income and business, and property taxes also drive up the prices even more.
That is why Californias gasoline is so expensive. We can thank the leadership in the state for that, its fucked up, as this is a very regressive tax that harms the poor the most. Plus the state still has a huge deficit even with high taxes. |

$3.599 for E10 87 octane today after 50 cents of love from my homegirl NH Jenny. $82.10 to fill the truck.
$3.699 was available elsewhere but I went to Chevron to see if I could beat that with Jenny's help. _________________ 2000 M Roadster

Also yesterday bought some E10 92 octane for the Roadster. $3.859/gal after 90 cents of love from my homegirl NH Jenny. Yes, $4.759/gal before Jenny. _________________ 2000 M Roadster

NH Jenny comes through again, with a full $1.00 off, making E10 87 octane cost $3.159/gal. $71ish to fill the truck. It would have been closer to $100 at full price. _________________ 2000 M Roadster

Prices jumped a nickel or a dime around here recently. Big tourist weekend here, but I'm sure that had nothing to do with the price hike that is directly opposite of the drop in cost in the past few weeks. _________________ nothing |
