When I had the type 4 engine and trans out of the bus, I did pull out the fuel tank and had it cleaned and sealed. While I was at it, replaced the rubber elbow at the gas cap end and the rubber connector between the tank and filler pipe. All the steel vent lines were cleared and the rubber connector hoses replaced.
When I remove the type 4 to do the swap, I will give the engine compartment a through cleaning and repaint it. I plan on adding LED lighting to the compartment ceiling. |

Will the electric fuel pump from a 2.0L Type 4 work (supply enough pressure, volume, etc.) for the 2.5L Subaru engine I'm using for my conversion? |

Yes, I'm using my stock FI fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator from my 76 Westy and it works perfectly. _________________ *******************************

My 2.5L EJ Subaru engine is from a 2002 Outback. My Subaru dealer says he can't find a part number for a timing belt kit. Do any of you have a part number for an OEM timing belt kit?

there is no "kit" from the dealer. just individual parts
I would use dealer only. lot's of garbage out there. What was once good....isn't anymore _________________

Of course OEM parts from Subaru would be best but I used the same Aisin kit as W1K1 did and recently passed the 25,000 uneventful mile mark on my swap in Sept this year. About a third of those miles were in the mountains loaded with gear and on many occasions, pulling a trailer.
I bought the kit back in 2018 after comparing a Gates Kit a friend bought versus the original Subaru parts off my engine, versus the Aisin Kit that my friend also bought after seeing how chintzy the Gates kit was. However, I'm not sure if the quality has changed in the 6 years since I bought my kit. _________________ *******************************

I've been looking at exhaust systems from Small Car, Van Cafe, etc. They are all stainless steel and pretty pricey. If I were to make my own system, is there any reason to not just use mild steel exhaust tubing? I realize it may not last as long as SS, and it certainly won't look as nice and have the "Bling Factor" of SS. |

that was 7 years ago. quality has slid in a big way since then.
As a guy in the automotive field, it hurts my pride knowing that Bosch is trash today, GMB/Gates has slid in a huge way in quality and the list goes on

you can use the stock exhaust manifold if you want.
i went with the Kennedy setup, it worked without having exhaust tubing going back and forth in front of the timing cover, just a cat bolted on off the 90 and a 97 ranger v6 muffler.

i have 2" from my muffler, could be more with a smaller diameter muffler, i just wanted it quiet

How are people connecting together the two coolant pipes that feed the heater core on a Subaru 2.5L. I've tried using 5/8" heater hose, but the tight radius makes it kink. |

I installed the heater core unit under my backseat and just ran them there and it works as it should but your hose with a couple 90 degree elbow fittings will work. _________________ *******************************

i didn't have any problem running mine with 1-2 foot of silicone rad hose looped under the bus while I decided on a heater core
mine is under the pedal splash pan and plugs into the front heater tree

It’s been a while since I posted any updates on my project and I’ve been busy.
I assembled the engine using a new short block from Subaru. I used only genuine OEM Subaru parts for the build. I had a local machine shop go through the heads and rebuild them. The transaxle has been rebuilt by Leduc Racing Components with a new 4.13 R&P and a 0.82 4th gear.
Following Vee-Dub-Nut’s example, I’m going with a belly mount radiator and using a modified AFCO all aluminum radiator and two Spal 13-inch fans. I used a NAPA, a 5/8” diameter molded ”U” shaped rubber hose to connect together the feed and return pipes for the heater core.
So, at this point the engine, transaxle and radiator are installed in the bus. Now I'm starting to connect the cooling system, and I have a couple of questions:
1. Has anyone used copper pipe for the hard lines between the engine and the radiator? The Big Box stores have copper pipe and fittings at reasonable prices, especially compared to pre-made stainless steel coolant pipes. Copper pipe and fittings will allow me to custom fit things as needed.
- I don’t believe galvanic corrosion will be a problem, as the dissimilar metals
will be separated by rubber/silicone coupling hoses.
- Would using mild steel exhaust tubing be a better choice?
2. How did you route your coolant hoses to the radiator; did you go over or under the torsion housing? Do you have any pictures you could share?
3. Expansion Tank. I know I need one, but I don’t know much more about it than that . . .
- Where does it go?
- What size?
- How should I plumb it in – Coolant manifold side or Thermostat side?
- Tee in at the high point of the cooling system?
Here are a few pictures of my progress to date. Note that the white PVC coolant pipe is just for mock up purposes.

i bought 1.5" stainless exhaust tubing off amazon and built mine, i tacked it with the mig and a buddy tigged it for me
drivers side is the high side, tee goes to the top of the VW bottle
pass side tee goes to the bottom of the bottle

My build is not as "elegant" as others but functions well. I used the Subaru rad and fans out of my donor as well as the overflow tank. Used heavy duty marine exhaust hose rated for the temp, materials, and operating environment. Added 4 connecters: 2 at high points in the coolant lines for bleeding air that lead up to a filling point (with shut off valves) just under the rear access hatch and the other 2 at the inlet and outlet of the rad to install temp sensors, wired to aftermarket gauges to monitor temps before and after the rad. Added a temp/thermo (180F) switch in the outlet connector of the rad to control the cooling fans and ran the ECU fan control wires to the Small Car Code cheat board.
All coolant hose that touches metal (or anything else) is protected by 2" PVC pipe to protect from abrasion or damage.
Experimenting with where to run the coolant hose.
Dry run before adding the protectant pipe.
