I've been sitting on a Washburn delrin shift rod bushing for a while - decided to rip out my WW bushing today to "upgrade" and as stated by others here, this new delrin one doesn't fit. I didn't look for feedback before buying but here we are - same problem as the others - not deep enough to "click" into place.

I cannot get the shift rod through the Delrin bushing. 1970 Bug Standard.

Any tips or ideas? Even if I can get it through I'm worried it will be way too tight for the shift rod to even move.

I've sanded down the shift rod remove rust and dirt and I've tried spraying wd 40 while trying to push it through.

Any advice?

Update: I just used a caliper and the inside of the bushing when in the hanger is 21mm and the shift rod itself is 22mm even at the point closest to the shifter.

If it was machined wrong, and the id is too small, advise is a email to the seller. They should not be letting those out the door

The bushing has a split in it, so you cant measure its ID in the bracket. The rod will expand the split, when installed. Just like a factory bushing

The guy who sold the bronze bushing and switched to Delrin isn't selling either bushing now. I wonder why...

As of May 12, 2025 we have discontinued offering the Custom VW Shift Rod Bushing. Thank you to all of those who purchased and used our custom bushings.

I think Washburns is still selling the snap in Delrin bushing and CIP is still selling the 2 piece bushing held in by one of the shifter bolts. (Likely other sources for both, that was a quick search.) The metal bushing being modified for a snap ring is a Hillman 882999. VW used a metal bushing until 1960.

June 2025 Hot VWs magazine has an article on a new delrin shift bushing for 1960-on Beetles on page 70. Search Washburn's Metal.

I've had the CIP1 split red one on my daily driver '73 Super for 18 months now. So far, so good, perfect feel to the shifter. And Super easy to install!
