I have a 68 convertible auto stick that sat for years. I just got it running. It has a 30 PICT 2 carb.
I get it started fine but it needs your foot on the pedal to keep it running else it stalls.
What adjustments do you recommend to maintain a good idle? |

Hey- welcome to the forum! I'm not an expert but I know you're going to get asked a million questions about details you have left out of your query. Give more detail of what you did to get it running- clean/overhaul the carb? Complete tune- up with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points- the whole nine yards? New gas, fuel lines, vacuum lines, clean air cleaner? What kind of manual have you got? Bentley? John Muir?
We are a great group of owners and experts. I'm sure you'll get answers! _________________ I'd be perfect if I wasn't so humble

Ned more info as mentioned. but it sounds like a defective idle cutoff not working properly. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

The 30PICT-2 was the first emissions carb and VW didn't want anyone mucking about with the added metering screw, so it's rather locked in place, making it very hard to fully clean the idle circuit.
Of course, the cutoff valve on the pilot jet needs to work, if you still have one. You can replace it with a normal plain jet.
Wait, you said AutoSick? Those used a specific variant of the 30PICT-2, you might have a fairly rare carburetor on there. Look for a modification state number on the base flange, left side, that says VW 167-1 or VW 167-2. _________________ Andy T.

Not having a detailed history of this engine would it be wise to purchase a new carb? I want to pull this one to rebuild but wanted another to swap to get this on the road.
If I did acquire another, what would you recommend I go with? |

A factory matched carburetor and distributor, if you have them and can get them running, is the way to go, And the autostick pulls vacuum from a fitting on that carburetor. But I don't know what you have there. Maybe post a photo or two? _________________ Andy T.
