So I purchased a 66 bug from a guy about 6 years ago and my son and I just finished having the work done. When I purchased the bug he offered to sell me this. I have now picked up this car and am wanting to build it as well. I guess by biggest question is with the serial number being so low and for what I am looking to do, is this the car I should do it to? I am looking to do a full resto but am wanting air ride, bring the bumpers in a bit, and not really trying to keep it factory. Thoughts? Car only has 57k KILOMETERS
We did my sons to 98% factory. We only upgrade was 12V, 1500 instead of a 1300 and four wheel disc brakes.

It's your car, do what you want but I'd bet you get some PM's offering to buy it for 100% resto and you get to buy an already customized or ready to customize better base car. Probably IRS. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

I’m going to start the process as if I am doing a full rebuild and see what happens. |

That's super cool to see a VIN that low. That's the second lowest VIN i'm aware of and only 1 of 6 VINs in the three digit numbers that I've see. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

Very Interesting Low VIN Number
I would change the title to
July 61
And NOT 62 _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic

I have that exact same trailer I was wanting to use for hauling non-running projects. How'd it work for you? Did you have to run 4 straps from each corner? Looks pretty tight on the sides. _________________ .

I'm surprised it's not full of bullet holes. As for rust, a couple of Gerson pans will fix most of the floor, and patch panels could be gotten from ISP, or Joel, same applies for the missing glass. Most of the work will be labor and searching for parts to keep it stock early (someone was having a hard time finding a 62 or 63 rear drum a couple of weeks back). Like Pedro said, call it a 61, because of the low VIN number. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Got these order this morning. Going to be a fun project, in no hurry to get it done. |

Just my opinion but being such an early car it should really be put back to original. Not an easy undertaking but totally worth it. Hope most of the early bits are still with it. Glad to see it saved from rotting away regardless. _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

Sweet!
For being such a low #VIN, I wouldn't do that...but it is your car. There is value to that VIN and if you go too far into the custom realm, well...that value might go right along with it. That being said, it is your car. Nice find! _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

I have decided to post it up for sale. It seems like it makes more sense to let someone go full factory restoration. Or I guess someone else build it as they see fit. |

do the rivets holding that VIN tag look original to the car ??? i dont know much about type 3 , but those look kinda like pop rivets ? my early bugs have solid rivets . just an observation . i duno
i did a google search and see some others similar to yours .......but in early bugs a pop rivet looks out a place .
here is a website showing BUG plates , looks to maybe use pop rivets after 68 .

What about the vin on the pan? That would make the early car lovers super happy. Calling Gizmo Bob! _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Hopefully whoever ends up with it, can take it to that next level! Gonna be a challenge, but it's definitely one worth saving. Make sure you update when you have a new project and can do all the things you want to do without us nerds guilt tripping you.
Good luck with the sale. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red
