|

Hi
I was doing an inspection of my front oem disc brakes and I noticed a couple of things.
1. the rubber boots on the guide pins need replacement. (Shouldn't be very hard)
2. The rubber seal around the piston looks like it has seen better days.
I noticed I can buy a caliper repair kit. Here is an example from rockauto.
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=878501&cc=1286478&pt=1720&jsn=1266
My question is, how difficult is it to replace the rubber surround around the piston? i.e. installing this type of kit.
Can I just push the piston out a bit and then replace or is it more complicated.
Thanks _________________ '86 Westfalia 2.0L Zetec

it's not hard to replace the outer seal nor that thin one that is the actual piston seal. here in the north, everything is always corroded and brake action benefits from full removal of the piston, polishing the bore and piston with a brown or green 3M pad, THOROUGH cleaning, and reassembly. here's the key with reassembly.. i'm a firm believer in using brake caliper assembly grease as it provides a much slipperier lube than brake fluid and helps with the all-important function of caliper piston retraction so the brakes don't hang up. like this stuff:
you DON'T want to use the below CRC on the piston seals! but it is perfect for the caliper guide pins. there are boot kits available for those guide pins (usually include new bolts) as well as new guide pins from autohausaz.com.
lastly, getting ONE caliper piston out is easy... it just pops out with brake pressure and if you just do one side at a time, that's fine. the trick is getting them BOTH moved out with hydraulic pressure if you plan on doing both at the same time. a series of shims is needed to move them both until they are just about to fall out. some folk with one shortened finger have tried moving the piston out in the bench vise with a blast of air pressure. it comes out like a rifle bullet under air pressure, which has compression vs hydraulic fluid that is incompressible. lots of stored energy in compressed air. _________________ -dan

I am working with a Girling Caliper (1986 westy) so
I only need to worry about a single piston.
Those are great tips, thank you cheers _________________ '86 Westfalia 2.0L Zetec

right. but i'm talking about getting the pistons out driver/passenger side IF you want to work on them both at the same time. otherwise, just do one at a time and pop 'em out with brake pedal pressure. _________________ -dan

There are YouTube videos detailing caliper rebuilds. |

Look for reviews on that rock auto rebuild kit before lighting money on fire
With brake parts , the money is in the quality of the compounding and RA is not a place known for quality stuff.
