I always imagine that it must have been nerve wracking as the war neared an end. after fighting for months or years it would be rotten luck to get killed in the last days of fighting.

I just cannot fathom the absolute joy back then when USA/UK folks heard about the success of the D-Day landing or the death of Hitler.
I know VE day/German surrender was just a week after Hitler's death, but must've been soon expected after the battle of the Bulge and Hitler's death. |
D day success was crucial to the 'beginning of the end' of the war and the high casualty toll was only acceptable because of this. so, yes, great relief and joy that it succeeded and we were not struggling for weeks/months to gain a foothold on the continent or thrown back to square one.
yes the allies were rolling across europe into germany but the fighting, bombing and deaths weren't over until the surrender was signed. luckily Doenitz, hitler's successor, was for peace but many units were prepared to fight to the last man. _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

Deonitz was not for peace, rather for surrender once defeated. He was tried and guilty of war crimes _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

A couple of weeks ago on the 16th April marked the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of the Stalag X1-B and 357 at Fallingbostel by the British 7th Armoured Division of the Second Army. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

May 8, 1945. Germany surrendered, end of WW2 in Europe. |
And in several years after the end of the war, VW, the Peoples Car, ( hitlers car??? ) will be exported to America, and that is good history too!!!
Story goes that an Allied bomb dropped on the VW factory failed to detonate, it was as I recall wedged in the factory in a critical generator room. Story goes that had it detonated, the factory would not have been able to be restarted under the British occupation, and if that happened, no more Bugs would have been produced. One dud bomb made the difference, had it detonated, no Bugs, no VW, no Samba!!!!! _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

Eddie鈥檚 Eruption was first recorded in 1978. I saw that one live at the San. Diego Sports Arena. _________________ Prosit!

IIRC, Eddie recorded it on the first take in the studio. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Not really VW unrelated, but just to remember, today, 65 years ago, 1960, June 1, the new 34/40 hp engine for type 2 started with engine number 5 000 000. (and replaced that 麓bastard麓engine) |
