Never did make a thread for the ugly duckling I impulse bought.
Another bastard creation of which roams the earth with unknown origins.
We all know the story, dune buggy r cool. × however many owners... sigh.
Anywho... it eventually made it's way to me.... poor thing....
Chassis # shows to be a 64 model.
I moved... and uh... bought that 66 baja Brick wall so it's just been sitting and I'm really really trying to motivate myself to get it back goin Dancing

Here be what we started with

And here be it sitting at me work yard.... where it's been since I moved. Boo hoo!

So... for motivation.... I did the most logical thing I could think of... impulse bought something that it really doesn't need yet... because I wanted to know how they would look on there. Applause
Some tractor tires, woohoo

And uh, well... that's how they would look on there.
Been wanting to try a set of those for some years now.
Measured wheel width was 9", I squished them on the 15x8's, seem to fit the dimensions of everything decently.
They advertised at 44lbs and the shipping weight actually showed 88lbs for the pair so must be accurate. For those who don't know, a 31x10.50r15 weighs in usually from 40 to 50lbs.

So... maybe I'll be working on it some more soon Very Happy

Love the look of buggys with those V tread terra tires. I’d be really surprised if they only weighed 44lbs, most LT tires that size are at least 50 and up to almost 70lbs when you got into 12.50’s / 13” wide, and those V treads that ive seen are typically 10- 12 ply’s.
The guys on woodsbuggy.com used to cut them down to the cords and still had plenty of rubber to hold up off-roading

Me too, gives em that sweet vintage look of the old days.

These are labeled as 6 ply. I'm really not sure wtf they are marketed for.
There was an 8 ply variant available but ofcourse it weighed more which was a turn off for me.

The more common 31x15.50-15 terra / v tread are marketed for small tractors and ditch witches (I've seen both types of machines with that size) and are unreasonably heavy. Also like you said, they are usually 10/12 ply.
Aaaand I already had the 8 wide wheels and didn't want to buy 10 wides for larger & wider tires.

Question I'm a friggin tire nerd.
Speaking of, I need to mount the engine and do some measuring to see how tall of a front tire i need. Searching around at the 7.60-15 and 9.5-15 5 ribs... trying to focus on floatation. The land out here is kind of deceptive... Will be driving along a nice patch of green forestry and start noticing water flinging off the tires... then it's too late for the pizza cutters.

Yeh your right, i was thinking of the 31 15.5’s …

As far as the fronts, it seems to mere theres alot more options and the price drops considerably if you can run 16” wheels. One of my rails i run motorcycle tires on the front, in order to get a decent tire size wise and to fit a 15” wheel , i had to get rear motorcycle tires. Everything else was too skinny but if i would run a 16” or 17” front wheel thatd open up more options.
Same rail i run dirt track tires on the rear, SUPER light weight but not so good offroad which is ok because it’s mostly for street and back country roads, gravel and dirt when i find them.

Another rail i have has 32” 10.5x15 side by side tires, theyre pretty light in comparison to LT tires and im sure will do good offroad, too bad they dont make side by side tires any wider though. Might have to go back to the 60’s and start running duals! Haha. All joking aside I’ve always liked that look though

Good bye to the 14's

Aaaaaaaaaand...
Decided to drag the engine out that I had alotted to the panbuggy. It is a 40hp that someone had built into a 1600 SP with 1300cc super small valve heads. I had an okish set of stock DP heads collecting shop dust so decided to put them on it.
So we now have a 1600DP built on a 40hp base with 180mm flywheel/clutch and a sand seal power pulley Laughing
No, I don't want to hear how crappy the power pulleys are.

Mated the engine to the tired old machine who was probably hoping to rot in peace.

Still have a little ways to go before I can ride once again, but getting closer Cool

Spent about 1.5 days tweaking out on this thing over the weekend.
Loaded it up Sunday afternoon and took it to a family gathering.
Had quite the blast on it.
Now has all new brake parts & hoses (agiain... i robbed them for something else)
Topped off the trans fluid and changed engine oil.
Couple other little Knick knack things.

Going to step down to a 215/75 front tire... the 225/75 just barely rubs the chassis at full lock.
And it has been time for kingpins which will be done soon...ish.

Yeah, it's kind of shameful how little it actually needed to be ridden again. Embarassed

OCD'D out on the net and picked another front tire.
Downsizing from the 225/75 trailer tires to a 215/75 LT tire.
And eye like em!

Also pictured, changed out the type 3 shifter for a cheap empi t handle.
The previous shifter never worked correctly. Reverse was accessed without pushing down so when you're wanting to romp through the gears, it was a bit hard to hit 2nd correctly.
The T handle works exactly as it should... oh and it doesn't seem to pop out of gear when taking off under heavy throttle. Win!
Stay tuned!

Nice! Wear some face protection because that tread pattern is going to throw some crap at you! My 5 rib implement tires are bad enough.

I rode it today and was glad I did wear glasses.
Besides that, it has rained here terribly as of late and they soaked me down with water.... that you can't even see it's just soaked in the ground at this point.
Was a good time though!
Buggy performed well.
Did have issues with the air filter neck flailing around alot and working it's way off a couple times.
Thinking of possibly making a little braket that attaches the filter housing to the shroud... or something.
Just pulled the top off the carb and cleaned the visible jet then slapped it back together and kept on rolling.
Will plan / investigate more later.
