I am in in need of a new starter for my car. Is there a huge advantage to buying a $250 Bosch starter versus a lesser expensive starter? _________________ ————————I'm your huckleberry———————— |

Buy an AutoZone self supporting autostick trans starter and never look back.
They come with a lifetime warrantee. So you'll never have to buy another one if it fails. The are under $200 without a core exchange cost. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Aint the auto stick only in 12 volt flavor?
and no, an expensive Bosch new starter is not needed.
you need to ask, 12 volt or 6 volt, and of course which flywheel you have. Some folks like me have a 6 volt flywheel and 6 volt starter, but run it on 12 volts power.
there are some rare instances of a 12 volt starter converted to work on a 6 volt flywheel.
the two types of flywheels have different gear pattern, so you need the correct starter motor gear to mesh with the flywheel you got. VW changed that gear pattern at the time they changed from 6 to 12 volts in 1967*
* however VW did make a rarish 12 volt system on some early car i believe that used the 6 volt gear pattern. Porsche 356 also could come with this set up or folks converted on their own.
I am a bit fuzzy on these details, smarter folks may correct me.
but you need to select the voltage and the gear pattern of the starter.
some also run the 6 volt system starter with a 12 volt solenoid when running on 12 volts, as this reduces the wear on the gears during meshing when running 12 volts on a 6 volt starter.
later bigger engines had a bigger clutch and most all those flywheels are 12 volt gear pattern, although there was a Bus (Micobus) big clutch flywheel that was also 6 volt gear pattern. folks that keep the 6 volt system, but build a bigger engine that needs the bigger clutch will use this Bus flywheel.
But oft you can find some just fine used starters for little money, no need to break the bank on this. |

6v or 12v?
If 6v, you might want to have yours rebuilt or consider this one from NAPA (lifetime warranty ... $95).
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/RAY2444237
If you decide on the 6v remanufactured one from NAPA, keep your old one. 6v components are getting harder to find and a rebuildable core is worth keeping, especially if it is an original Bosch unit. _________________ Tom

Local generator/starter/motor/armature rebuilding shops -whatever flavor they advertise - can do a good rebuild on your stock starter. If you're not pressed for time, consider bringing yours by a shop and ask them about it. _________________ Robert in Memphis

Just bought a new Bosch starter SR15N from Amazon for my beetle. The one they sent does not have the notches to work with the d headed bolt, so you need two people to tighten the bolt. Not sure if all new Bosch are this way, but J Bugs says theirs are also. New Chinese engineering. Sent it back and bought a rebuilt from O'Rieleys. _________________ 1965 VW Sedan, 1968 C10 Step BB, 99 C5

Was this a 6-volt or 12 volt starter?

Rockauto has automatic starters for $43, plus 10 for core charge
Fyi... auto starters have high failure rate for solenoids. They arent same as manuals and nobody makes replacements. |

12 volt, believe that my problem was the solenoid, and the three different starters that I looked at all had a different type solenoid on them. Could not find a source just for the solenoid. _________________ 1965 VW Sedan, 1968 C10 Step BB, 99 C5 |

This. If your starter is original to the car, you get the benefit of retaining it. There is some satisfaction to that, I've found. _________________ Parts needed:
