The early small popout windows (pre-'65) used a thin plastic compression washer to hold the window open. These washers become brittle and disintegrate after 60 years. An easy fix is to substitute an oil drain plug compression washer, which is a perfect fit.
Most of us have some of these left over in our toolbox. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Perfect, simple, elegant, and, everyone that has owned a VW for any length of time has one or more of those drain plug seals waiting to be put into service.
Thanks for posting this idea. _________________ I have learned over the years.

I just had to deal with that. I wrapped a piece of twine around there and cut the ends off. A piece of plastic is much better to do.
How did you get the cap off to put that washer on? Did you just flex it around it? _________________ www.vwnos.com sales@vwnos.com

Just take it apart.
Loosen the small set screw on the knob, unscrew the knob completely off, and the whole elbow comes apart. The washer fits between the two arms, as you see in the photo. Normally this would be a narrow flat plastic washer, but they often break or are missing. Have a safe space to put the small parts as you work. Each side should take about five minuites to do.
This is more durable than the original equipment. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Thanks for that. I bet those who meet you call you a genius a lot.
I know you can disassemble it. There is a screw of some type in the hole. I could not see in the hole. I tried a screw to take apart glasses because maybe I need glasses here but that didn't fit. In the spare time I wrapped a piece of twine around it and tied a knot. That worked well but that twine will come apart. _________________ www.vwnos.com sales@vwnos.com

I call myself a genius.
There is a tiny screw in the knob. You use a jewelers flathead screwdriver to loosen it. You can then unscrew the knob entirely off and pry the whole thing apart. The central shaft fits through a cone-shaped eccentric that holds it all in place. it's a very simple arrangement. Good luck! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.
