My shifter on the floor is in park but the indicator on the dash displays reverse. It won’t start unless I put the floor shifter in neutral. What part do I need to to change to fix the issue?

Thank you

The multifunction switch on the transmission. Also known as the park neutral switch.

It can be changed without draining the fluid. You just have to be quick... have the new switch in one hand, pull out the old switch after removing the bolt, quickly put the new switch back in place. You'll loose an oz. or two of fluid if you're quick.

Here's the location:

No. As far as the ECU is concerned, it was never put in park and that would not throw a code.

My skills are nowhere as good and fast as Eurotec's Laughing

When I replaced my switch, the rubber O-ring sealing things up is tighter than I expected. I couldn't get the whole thing securely back in place until I was able to get that mounting bolt torqued to cinch things back together. I lost about a quart of transmission fluid in the process.

So before you undertake this (or probably good maintenance anyways) you may want to consider replacing the transmission fluid while you're at it. But that's not simplest of procedures, so do read up about it first.

Gents,

Well I replaced the shift indicator (neutral safety switch)on the transmission and still the same problem.

What else could be causing the problem?

You should probably carefully inspect the shift cable, it's mountings, and all bushings and such associated with it.

When it's showing the wrong gear, is it actually operating in the indicated mode?

I.e. when it shows Neutral, but is in drive, does it behave like it's in drive or Neutral?

The transmission acts perfectly normal. The issue is I can only start the van with the shifter in the neutral position.

When in park the dash shown reverse. Seems like the issue is the dash indicator won’t move to park when the shifter is in park.

Sounds like the shifter cable is misadjusted. You can adjust the shifter cable by loosening bolt #2 below on the shift lever.

Checked the cable and it’s in the correct position

Something I find strange is that I don’t have to press the brake to shift out of park.

Is that normal?

With the key not in the ignition it won’t shift. When I turn the key to the on position it will shift without pressing the brake.

There must be another actuator that allows the shifter to unlock when you press the brake?

I'm not gonna be any help here other than,
I just checked the shift lever, Key on and no brake depressed. It will not shift into any gear. Only when I depress the brake pedal does it shift into reverse.

To me, this situation seems like your EV needs some type of cable adjustment to get the dash indicator reading correctly.

Thank you. This thing is the shifter is in every position the way it should. I drove the van an manualy shifter from 1st to park. It shifter perfect For some reason it won’t move the indicator on the dash.

The indicator is in the correct position on the dash in every position except park and 1st.

I found why I can shift with out the brake.

There is a little electric actuator the is supposed to hold back this black lever. When I turn the key forward it pushes the lever back but then immediately releases it. That black lever is supposed to lock the shifter until you press the brake.

Since the actuator is not working could the indicator be stuck in reverse when the shifter is in park as a fail safe for starting in gear? [/img]

Can’t figure out how to post a picture

Part is called shift lock solenoid

Just because the cable is in the correct position doesn't mean that it is adjusted correctly. Loosen the bolt holding the cable, pull the cable forward a bit, and then tighten the bolt.

Follow the cable to the shift shaft on top of the transmission and make sure there isn't a rock or something blocking the shaft arm from turning. Give it a nudge in the park direction while you're there.
