I suspect there is a big SCENE MISSING card in there somewhere.
In any event, you have more clue as to how your bus got started on its journey than many of us. |
Having "383 North American equipment Includes 6 popouts and safari windows", think by just that would mean the bus was special ordered. This due to Iceland being more of a European leaning country, so road laws much more aligned to that side of the Atlantic. Hopefully someone has much more Iceland knowledge could speak up about this.
Plus as always the demand for Westies, especially early in the 1960s, doubt that VW dealership/s in Iceland would have them sitting in the display. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I think your right about a big scene missing. I haven't contacted the older sister yet. She knows more from what I was told.
And you right he may have just picked it while he was there and driven off in it. I kinda just thought he ordered it while in Germany knowing he was going to Iceland? But who knows. I am just happy I know this much about it lol _________________ 62 type 2 So34

With the 383 mcode and the Iceland destination code, I would suspect that this bus was either bought new by a US Service Member stationed at NAS Keflavik or it was a Tourist Delivery.
I know of 4 Westfalias that were delivered to Panama and purchased new by US Service Members. All four have a 3XX mcode for US Specs. The westys were then shipped back to the US at the end of the Service Members tour.
I don't believe Iceland was an option for the Tourist Delivery program, but anything is possible.
There are numerous examples of Tourist Delivery flipseats that have a 3XX mcode that are also US spec buses. Oakman's super nice patina monster SO35 is a perfect example. _________________

I have done a lot of research on tourist delivery. It is also called European delivery and overseas delivery. I have over two dozen pieces of literature relating to it. Cars were available through VWoA's program, and other programs outside of the VW network, usually by shipping companies or dealerships. Serviceman cars are in the same general category of cars. Basically, they were all cars that were special order, built to USA specs but delivered outside the USA. None of the literature mentions Iceland, so it is likely a serviceman car. I have seen several of them from Japan, where the United States had military bases also. _________________ .

I love your bus! Thank you for letting me look all over it in line at OCTO. It was really nice meeting you in person and I am super excited to see what you do with it. It looks like you have most of the interior. Did it come with the three cushions that make up the bed?
Cheers,
Johnny

Sorry thought I replied.
No it didn't come with the cushions or boards. I am missing that whole side bench section. It seems like he pulled the cabinets out a long time ago and some of it got lost.
That might be why he had the full length seats in there instead.
Thanks for the pics I didn't take any of Lurch while I was out there and I should have. _________________ 62 type 2 So34

Yes, totally normal for a flipseat. They were built on the swivelseat bus seat base. Some have the walkthrough mat, some don't. I can't really tell, does your's have the rubber walkthrough mat?
Killer Westy, glad you started a thread on it!!

Thanks! and unfortunately there is no rubber mat in the walkthrough section. Just the one for the front section. I wasn't sure if that was supposed to be rubber though. I know the cargo mat is supposed to be a different material. There is a rubber one in there now _________________ 62 type 2 So34

I'd keep the SAC decals. And does it have the air conditioner parts still in it, or just the control box? |
Oh the decals on the bumpers are staying. There will be minimal changes to the exterior.
The only AC parts left were the compressor and lines. The rest was gone so I will be removing the connections he put on the roof.
I want to put the correct heater back in too. _________________ 62 type 2 So34

Is the Laminated Glass normal with the USA spec options? _________________ 62 type 2 So34

Most '57-'63 USA spec passenger buses had Sigla laminated side glass. Occasionally early ones has Sekurit. By at least '59, virtually every passenger bus had Sigla. Panels and trucks had Sekurit. Sigla was only for USA spec buses. I have never seen it on a Euro spec bus. So I would expect that a bus built with Sigla glass was ordered with USA specs. _________________ .

After complaining that the swaps are dead, I stumbled upon an SO34/35 bed cushion for sale @ Spring Picnic back in May. A good friend from the East Coast thumb wrestled me for it and won. PM me if you are interested and I can get you in contact with him to see if he will let it go. _________________

DANG! Too bad it's just the one.
I think I'm just going to get the boards made and run foam for now. I'm thinking that'll be comfortable too. _________________ 62 type 2 So34

If you are missing the grey Formica plywood piece that screws onto the backside of the front seat pedestals, we have that as a spare. Got it out of a SO-34 that sat out in the woods for decades with roof hatch and windows missing. So the plywood rotted away and all that is left is the Formica. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
