|
|
Hey all, I just picked up these reduction boxes and I failed to notice that they are somewhat different. They are both big nut boxes and a quick count of turns tells me they are the same ratio. (I haven't pulled them apart to count teeth, I just marked the axle flange and the stubs and counted a revolution, if you will)
I noticed that one has the flat top to accept a bump stop and the other does not.
Does this mean that one is 3/4 ton and the other is 1 ton?
Any info is greatly appreciated

Don't know when they went to the bump-stop but it shouldn't matter for fit and compatibility. Hardly ever does the bump-stop hit. |

The one without the bump stop probably belonged to the guy who invented those Kong chew toys for dogs.

early 1 tons did not have bump stops
late 1 ton axle tubes do have bump stops.
If you are putting the tranny in a 61, or other bus w/o the upper stops for the bump stops, it doesn't matter.
If putting it in a late split that has the upper stops for the bump stops, I would use axle tubes with the bump stops, if I had the option.
Then again, I've taken the 66 kombi on Shasta a few times.
you can see where teh bumpers stop against in this pic:

So for clarification, are you indicating that I have 1 early 1 ton axle and 1 late 1 ton axle? |

Well, actually, early 1 ton is the 63 little nut version, so you have one mid 1 ton axle/RGB and one late 1 ton axle tube/RGB
I can tell they are both 64-67 one ton as they both have the circle on the side that faces the spring plate. That's the plug you have to pull out to get to the inner nut for the lower inner bearing.
You can run those as a pair. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |
