Hi,
great work, great Bug! The gas cap looks correct to me. It is the "higher" later version. This version replaced the older and flatter gas cap with the big VW-logo.
VW repair shops even replaced the flatter gas caps on older cars, because the hgher ones were supposed to be safer in an accident with tumbling over. The older version looks nicer with the VW logo, but I personally prefer the newer one (which you have) for safety reasons.
You are on the right track with the seal: It can be rubber or cork and it goes between the outer margin of the lid and the inner circle of the cap.

well it looks like I messed up, my engine is leaky.
I must have not put enough gasket sealer in the right places...
Luckily I have another engine rebuild seal kit
So other than tearing it down, replacing all the paper gaskets, cleaning up the old gasket seal, applying new seal and putting it back together are there any things non-obvious I need to worry about?
I'll be following the Muir book... I also have Bentley for reference but like the extra hand holding Muir gives
This rebuild was my first time Solo, my first time was back in 1978 guided by my Uncle who was a VW mechanic... Boy I should have hung out in his garage more LOL
So here's the bad and the ugly...
This is the second time this oil showed up... the first time I wiped it off and checked for any loose bolts

Brake parts arrived (everything except the hardlines)
Front first, I was amazed how thick the grease was almost a paste in areas.
The right inner seal was not seated properly (ie fell out) and was leaking a bit
The bearings cleaned up nicely and they were stamped "Made In France"
Ordering new seals
The adjusting stars did not want to budge, lots of dust inside the hub very dry.
Will clean and lube and see how they work.
Drums look good, I have an impulse to clean them up with emery paper.
And then score a line across them cause my Uncle Bill said so!
My Uncle was a VW Mechanic...
Doing a little bit every day!

I NEVER should have said THAT!
It is almost a year later... I was having problems bleeding the brakes..
and got frustrated... finally got back to it...
I may have cross threaded one of the hard line fittings to the 3 port T in the rear.
Had to replace it...
The brakes are OK, may need more bleeding.
Funny story...
One of the axle nuts was not going on/off easy as I would have liked, so I ordered 2 nuts while getting the 3 Port T for the hard line.
The nuts did not go on at all, they were different...
So my son looks at the 56 and says, can we use THIS axle nut?
I said NO at first because I did not want the 56 to become a 'parts' car
but we tried it, it went on fine, needed a wrench but want on ok.
I then took the 'BAD' nut and spun it on the 56 and it turned like butter, hand tight all the way down!
Too funny
The 56 has the same trans as the 67... with the 67 being 99% stock maybe my Dad was making sure there the correct parts on hand LOL
Today was a good day!
Next, reinstall gas tank ( coated inside) check the battery, check the oil and maybe DRIVE!
It has not been driven for almost 10 years, it is LONG over due! _________________ Tampa, FL

Been driving it on short rides... this weekend noticed it smelled too hot
Oil Level is rock solid (weird never remember a bug that didn't leak oil...)
I think I installed the thermostat without adjusting it at all... or maybe it is bad...
Oh yeah it rides REAL nice (got new tires too!)
Rolls STRAIGHT as an arrow

Yes, but not as much as I would like (said every Bug owner *ever*)
I finally replace the torn axle boots and I left it for a week or so and noticed oil on the floor!
More than usual!
It seems thinner but after leaving is a few (gasp) weeks, I do see a darker spot on the center of the cardboard I put down to watch the pattern...
I've been putting it off... but I at least looked under it and pulled the dip stick (Thanks to you for asking) and it is steady at about 1/8" below the full mark
After I put the new-ish boots on I did drain the transaxle and clean both magnets on the drain plugs _________________ Tampa, FL

Good to hear you are back at it. Other priorities can derail you for a while but at least you can occasionally look at it and see how nice it looks which in turn can motivate you to get back on it when you have time. My savannah beige 67 has been waiting in its garage for the last 10 years while I attended to aging parents in Florida. It's time has now come and I will begin pulling it apart in the next month or so. I enjoy watching your progress, you have a nice car there. Regards Bob |
