Pretty new to the Eurovan Westfalia world, having picked up a '92 Canadian-spec model late last year. Finally took it on a shakedown camping trip, and noticed that the floor up front got very warm and the shifter boot got very hot, despite the weather being around 70F and not having a long drive, big hills, etc.

Looking under the floor, the heat shield is in place and I don't see any insulation. Everything shown in the diagram seems to be present, although the shifter boot is just sitting on top of the carpet and not sealed down at all.

Is this typical? Are there any common fixes to this, like adding extra insulation under the carpet, ceramic-coating that section of exhaust running under the floor, etc? I don't think this would be very enjoyable on a long drive in hot weather? Thanks.

Welcome to the insanity! Very Happy

So, It appears that you have a manual trans on your EV.

That shift lever boot looks like it should be screwed down to the body of the van.

Mine is an 03 EV and I have my own unique issues.

Hopefully one of the folks here with an older EV can lend some advice as to what is causing the excessive heat in your EV.

I've noticed in my 2000 eurovan camper that the floor gets pretty warm - I've measured 107F carpet temperatures when driving in 80F ambient. I've wondered if a layer of insulation under the carpet would help with this.

I've also noticed that air coming through the vents runs 10F+ warmer than ambient (and I have already done the blender door fix, so I'm pretty sure it's not hot air leaking in from the blender box).

I think that's pretty normal.. Mine is the same, especially on long trips in the summer. If you look under the car and in the engine compartment you should see some heat shielding material, its like a sandwich of aluminum with some insulating material in between. You can check to see if that is all in place.

The shift boot just pops on to the pegs but is hard to get to stay. Having that down tight really helps keep the heat out of the cabin

Mine gets pretty warm. There's not much there between it and the exhaust.

I've fought with the shifter boot too but pretty much given up on it staying in place. Kind of like the sliding door panel.

Regarding the shifter boot staying attached to the floor. Mine would come off as well. I resolved it, and it has been staying for me. I used a heat gun on the plastic cylinders that attach onto the studs on the floor. Then once a little soft, narrowed them little, with a pair of pliers. Now there is enough friction to keep the boot in place, for me.
