Any TRUCK owners remove their gas sender without removing the gas tank? Just making sure before I unbolt the divider panels and crawl in there that I won't be blocked by 1/4" or something annoying. _________________ Craig K

Almost a decade ago I just removed the fuel tank on my '59 D-Cab (which of course does not have a fuel gauge or sender). It wasn't that hard to do. I doubt that you can remove the sender in yours straight upwards without cutting a hole in your load bed. Drain the tank, remove the fuel outlet/drain assembly with filter sock, and un-strap the tank. Maybe you could rotate the tank enough to get to the fuel sender, loosen and remove it, but your neck and back will be broken by then from all the contortion-ism. Probably easier to continue to remove the tank! Pull the tank towards the driver side, and rotate the empty tank about 90 degrees as you manouver it out through the vertical rectangular opening on the driver side into your S.C. treasure chest area (or under rear seat stowage area on a D.C.) and then outside.
Have a new fuel "sock" with fresh red gaskets, and the thick spongy foam gasket between the tank bottom and the chassis on-hand as you'll probably want to replace them all while you have the tank rotated or removed.
EDIT: I thought that I had this process documented fairly well in my huge build thread on that '59 Double Cab Pick-up, so I looked and found it; Click here to see how I re-installed the tank (you'll just use the procedure in reverse to remove your tank:

thanks Bll - Raul has a full belly right now, so I'll have to drive him a bit before I drain. The replacement sender better work is all I gotta say! _________________ Craig K

For the record - a truck owner can easily remove a sender fom the tank without effort or removals (aside from divider panels if you have them). PLENTY of room.
Also, that gas smell you've been having? Never use an orange seal! This is one year old.

On the early piano hinge rear hatch, why do they have a second “up” position?
I get the idea of having options, but I just don’t see how I would ever use the the “insane all the way open pointing at the sky” position |

I was thinking it's a tall vs short person thing too.
Unless it's for clearance while loading stuff through the hatch but I can't see the height mattering much. _________________ How to Post Photos

Gloss level on a truck's L41 black steering column? I have satin and gloss rattlecan epoxy; gloss seems too much and satin seems not enough :P. They were handed me by a guy who has restored VWs, and he recommends the satin. Or spray the gloss a little dry, but I know that's a skill to get it just right.

Radio question about the older, valve two-part Blaupunkt radios that have a reciever which mounts to the dash, and a separate transformer/amplifier 'power pack'...
How does the power pack mount in a bus application?
Pictures in the installation manuals for those two-part radios in the Technical section all seem to show Beetle installations. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/radios.php _________________ Andy
